Honestly right after Christmas is very bad!! If the relationship isn't going anywhere then you need to do it now. I mean honestly now would be a good time but around Christmas time or right after is not good. If you want to wait till after Christmas I'd do it like the end of January..... They way you won't be considered a jerk. By the way is this a guy or girl because that would make a difference..

Breaking up with someone is better to do sooner than later.
The best time to break up is when you think feel and want to breakup that very time is the right time.
Whether its before christmas or after christmas or right now is what you got to think about it and decide when your ready to breakup.

Why so that you can for out that last bit of money to give them a nice gift before you tell them that you aren't in love with them. OR so that you can get a last gift?
No I think that if you already know that you don't think things are going to work out then you should do it as soon as you know it. The reason being because it may be obvious that it is not working out to you but to the other person you are allowing them to remain attached for another month. Another month of feelings growing and them becoming more in love with you and more attached. Let them go now so that they don't get to attached and the healing time for them can be shortened a bit.

I think you should break up with him/her when you know you're going to do it. Don't prolong it. They'll still have a good Christmas - and they'll get over it. If you two live together though, it would be a little different.

yeah, I'd wait until after New Years infact. The holiday's are hard enough for some people without having to deal with a broken heart.

no because it would mean that your not sure if you like him still or not. There is no reason to keep live your life longer than you have to with a person you don't love anymore
