Ottawa is the Capital of Canada. It was chosen for its defensive position and as a mid-way point between Upper and Lower Canada. The previous capital, Kingston, was right on Lake Ontario and was successfully attacked during the War of 1812. When Canada was formed in 1867, there was cocnern that the US would be turning troops north after the Civil War. Hence, Ottawa.

Ottawa
Although not originally planned that way. The queen said to put it there because it was about halfway between the two cities the french and English Canadains were arguing about. Ottawa was only a small logging community at the time.

Ottawa, Ontario serves as the national capital of Canada at her majesty, Queen Elizabeth's pleasure. I added that because designating where the federal government in to meet is one of the very few perogative powers (meaning the Queen can exercise it by herself WITHOUT sanction from parliament) that the British Monarch has left in Canada.
Betcha that screwed with a few people's heads!!!
