As long as you are a functional, productive, and discreet member of society, i think a little indulgence is necessary. Are you meeting the needs of your family and self? If so there is no reason why you should feel guilty. The reason people end up in substance abuse counseling is because they cannot meet the above criteria. I am a nurse and i enjoy the same once in a while. Why should everyone else have all the fun :)

I think you know the answer already. That fact that you are concerned about it makes me beleive that you know it is wrong. Drinking is perfecftly legal and if you are not abusing it(as a counselor you know what constitutes abuse, is it having a negitive effect on any aspect of your life?) As a counselor you should not be using marijuana you know it is both illegal and also a gateway drug. You know you have no business using an illegal substance while counseling people who are addicts. You need to stop. If you are not able to stop on your own you should seek help. You know if any of the other counselors who work with you know you are using an illegal substance they are obligated to report you. You could lose your job and possibally your certification.

the keys words here are abuse and occasional............. there is a difference.
Abuse is a general term for the use or treatment of something (person, thing, idea, etc.) that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person or thing, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) or is unlawful or wrongful. Its close synonyms are mistreatment and maltreatment. The word "misuse" has a more distant meaning of incorrect, uneducated use, not necessary harmful.
Abuse can be something as simple as damaging a piece of equipment through using it the wrong way, or as serious as severe maltreatment of a person. Abuse may be direct and overt, or may be disguised and covert.
Occasional happening, seen, used, or doing something from time to time but not regularly or frequently. Done for or connected with a special event.
There is nothing wrong with what you are doing.

You know the answer to this. People do not set out to misuse or abuse a substance. Their usage begins innocently enough and generally in social situations. You may have run across people very much like yourself. Indeed I have known more than a few substance abuse counselors who were recovering addicts. There is also the question of setting a good example. People tend to ask 'have you ever used drugs?'. If your answer is yes I have and yes I do if will be difficult for them to accept your advice.

No, just a hypocrite. I am a recovering addict and I know I would never feel comfortable around someone who is lying about who they are to me while trying to help me figure out my life. The occasional social drink is fine. Some people can have one or two without having a problem. But smoking dope is not okay. 1) its illegal and 2) that is exactly what you are trying to teach people to stay away from. I can't believe you even need ask this question. You may want to consider getting some help yourself.

Without reading any other replies,
I would have you ask yourself "What would the consequences be if you were found to be "indulging" in the occasional joint...
Drinking beer (Responsibly) is not an issue, but being arrested for marijuana will cause you (1) to lose your professional credibility, and (2) will put you on the other side of the table...
It is both hypocritical and inappropriate! What would your patients say if they found out?

Yes, you are the pot calling the kettle black...even though you are not abusing the substance, well, the weed you are...it is a wee bit hypocritical...but, if you are really helping the people you are counceling...then I would just be true to yourself about this....someone who doesn't do it, might not even be as kind or helpful...I personally, would be dissapointed if I was one of your patients and found out...but that's just me

No! If you're trying to help people get over heir own problems don't do what you're doing! Yes, an occasional beer may be okay, I mean people do like to drink beer but don't have joints! You're trying to help people not encourage them to do what they're doing!

Depends on what you mean by occasional. Also it seems hypocritical for you to be preaching abstinence when you are indulging yourself. How would you feel if you were busted for posession?
