Tilt head forward, excessive blood in the stomach will make you vomit.
The next step will be taken with skepticism, but after 15 years as a Paramedic I have seen it work with my own eyes many many times, and the basic anatomical reason is simple if you care enough to study the blood supply routed to the nose...
Roll a piece of gauze or tape about 1/2 wide into a roll the size of a pencil eraser. Put it inside your upper lip as far up as you can, and hold it with gentle upward and inward pressure from the outside of your lip. The bleeding will almost instantly stop. Continue to hold for few minutes, longer if you are on anticoagulants, thinners, aspirin, or NSAIDS while a clot develops.
Seek medical attention for a more permanent fix if a clot doesn't quickly develop.

It doesn't matter which way you put your head, because the blood will clot anyway. When you put it back, the blood will run down your throat and might make you gag (unless you enjoy the taste of blood). In any case, it doesn't matter which way you position your head, it will clot. Putting your head forward is a lot more comfortable and convenient (and less gross), and the blood will clot somewhat faster. Stuff some tissue into the nostril and wait until it stops. If there's lots of bleeding, you may want to use a tampon (I know it sounds freakish, but it works best for strong flow). Put some ice or other cold object on the back of your neck or bridge of the nose. Do NOT blow your nose. It will only make the bleeding worse and cause more damage in the nasal tissue.
To prevent future nosebleeds, make sure your nasal tissue doesn't get too dry. Regularly smear some Vaseline into the afflicted nostril.
I have spent the majority of my childhood with nosebleeds, and Vaseline was the only thing that truly worked.

Proper treatment for a nosebleed correctly called an epistaxis is NOT NOT to tilt the head back. The blood will now drain down the back of the throat into the stomach and the stomach does not like blood, it will come back out. Sit upright or lean slightly forward. Put pressure just below the bridge of the nose and ice can be applied as well. Do not blow the nose once it has stopped since you can dislodge the clot you just tried so hard to develop. If the bleeding continues after 20 to 30 minutes or is extremely severe you need medical treatment.

Pinch you're nose for around 15 to 20 minutes or until the bleeding stops. Don't tilt you're head backwards because the bold will drip down you're through (yuck). If you get a lot of nose bleeds think about buying a humidifier and put it in you're bedroom when you sleep. I get bad nosebleeds during the winter and that is what I had to do. Hope it helps! Jessie

Come now, people who had nosebleeds should know better. By putting your head back, it sometimes makes the bleeding worse. Its also harder to stop.
Like the EMT said, tilt your head forward.
Also you can blow your nose if the bleeding doesn't stop quickly enough. Do it gently. I found that when i had nose bleeds and I blew my nose the bleeding stopped quicker. HOWEVER, this might not work for everyone. It was just my own finding.

Whenever I got a nosebleed, my parents or teachers just told me to tilt my head back, and sit down so my blood would settle. But, I think the teachers just told me that because of the health risks. If I got blood and on the floor and happened to have an STD of some sort and someone came in contact with the blood, then they'd get it. I think my parents did it because they just didn't want me to bleed all over the place.
But now when I get a bloody nose, I just sit down, keep my head at a normal posistion and hold tissue under my nose. Best way for me.

The person with the nose bleed should be seated; he/she should NOT lie down, as blood can choke them. They should lean forward, and gently blow the nose clear of blood. This allows air to get to the site of the bleeding, so that clotting can begin to take place. If this does not take care of the problem in a reasonable time, get to an emergency room so that nose can be packed and/or the vessels cauterized to stop the bleeding.

Pinch the nose and hold. If you tilt your head back the blood will drain into your throat so it is actually better to hold your head to where you are looking forward or to look toward your feet. By pinching the nose, about where a pair of eyeglasses would sit, you are applying pressure to the blood vessels. An cut should be treated the same, apply pressure and hold.

First, blow your nose hard, get all the blood out. Put your head back, face up, then put one ice cube, and leave it on your nose until u feel its getting too cold, u take it off, then put it back. If you can go see a doctor, now a days, they can burn the little veins in your nose that makes it bleed. Its a very fast and not painfull surgery, you'll be done in 30 minutes. take care
