I have recently started a hobby of ghost vigils in haunted houses. I have a digital stills camera and a normal non digital video camera. How can i use either to get good night time shots?
Do i have to spend out on a ready made night vision camera or can i convert either by use of lights or special lenses etc?

You can take an older camcorder apart and remove the little blue IR filter from the front of the image sensor CCD. These are put into the camera to desensitize them to IR light and make the colors balance better. You just might be surprised how sensitive the thing will be to infrared light without that little blue filter.

For even better results you can get a deep red IR filter to place on the front of the lens. And if your camcorder is one of the few ancient consumer models that has a video gain-up switch then turn it up all the way for best results.

Just don't expect the camera to record colors normally in well-lit areas after this!

olin1963's idea is a good idea if you are up to it, but taking apart a camcorder can be a huge hassle, not to mention the camera might not function at all if something goes wrong. Sony offers minidv cameras with IR recording, with the cheapest around $370. Im not sure about canon, and panasonic i know has a higher end camera with IR recording, although i dont know about their consumer cams. If you get a minidv camcorder, you will get better quality than analog, and it will be easier to edit than analog, making your videos better. Im not saying that you have to go get a minidv camcorder, but eventually you will upgrade from analog to digital anyways, and it makes sense to get one now with IR, since itll be something youll need. If youve ever seen Most Haunted on Discovery youll know what IR looks like. Hope this helps!

You could use a web cam fitted with IR LED's as a cheap way. If you use a program called Pryme, you can use a web cam as a security camera which only switches on when it detects movement and records to the hard drive.
