By not trying.

Girlfriends are great to have, unless you get so dependent upon them or they upon you that it becomes a source of pain and sorrow.

Step back. Take a deep breath. Get to like yourself a whole lot. Be dedicated to treating people with kindness -- men and women. Don't worry about whether who you really are is making the right impression on prospective girlfriends.

Engage in activities in which you can demonstrate who you are. Then step back and watch what happens. The ones worth loving will be attracted. The others might even be attracted, too. If you know yourself well enough and like what you know, you'll be able to find the keepers.

Think of it this way. If you're in a hurry, you may get involved in the wrong woman. The time you saved rushing to find someone will in the long term be eaten up by the time you wasted with the wrong girlfriend.

For Christmas, get her a bottle of her favorite booz, knowing girls it will probably be like some berry vodka, and in the note say I'll be over there Friday night and we'll drink this. Then let the alcohol work its magic my friend. Remember to take a mixer, and if she declines the invitation to take the liquer back.
