I have been looking around for a full size home sound system, but all there is out there is mini systems and home theather audio. I cannot find any multi component systems with the 4 feet tall speakers and the rack stand w/ glass doors. Does anybody know if they still make them?

They are still made. You have to go to a custom shop to get anything with real power anymore.

I know where you are coming from. But don't be afraid to buy a good "home theater" receiver. They are much better in many ways than the old stereo receivers of the pre home theater era. Home theater DOES NOT mean home theater only. Lurking inside most home theater receivers is a great stereo receiver. Most of the more expensive ones still offer a true phono input. That's crucial, because many of us still play LP records. Also, any a/v in/outs that have no video sources connected to them can be used for an audio only source (like that extra tape deck that you have waiting to be used).
As far as the speakers are concerned, I have seen some good old fashioned "big" speakers still being made out there. But, may I make a suggestion? Buy some regular sized speakers and add a good powered sub-woofer. For example, get some reasonably sized tower speakers and a good 12" or 15" sub-woofer. Such a set up will blow away any of the old style "big" speakers.
Besides, if the home theater bug finally bites you (in a manner of speaking), you will already have the essential pieces and can finish the job from there.

Old Stereo Systems

Let's see what was in those racks.

Turntable - who uses one today?
Equalizer - parametric EQs now available on a chip
Tuner - full tuner now available on 1 chip
Tape Deck - huh? tapes?
CD player - in use but fading as more people stream music.
Amp w/ preamp - still in use

You can still spend a lot of money and get discrete components.
I won't argue with the guy who spends $10000 on a nice rack. I'ld rather spend it on something else.

Most home-theater amps do have a "stereo" or 2 channel mode. For many people, they buy a good home AV receiver and two stereo speakers. Later on, they can add the center and rear speakers if they choose.

Go to a proper Audio retailer and you'll be spoilt for choice. Separates are far superior to mini systems with mega bass speakers and bright flashy LCD screens. They cost more but produce an awesome sound.
