This wiccan girl I know celebrates something called Christmas Evil every year. She and her friends got the idea from someone on the net, but they added an element that I don't agree with (of course, being Catholic, that's not the only thing I don't agree with).

In the middle of calling the quarters, praising the Goddess and passing out chocolate santas, this girl added the element of burning a christian prayer card with either the picture of Jesus or Mary on it. I don't think that's right. She says she does it to "purify herself and her friends from the taint of the christians all around her".

Have you ever heard of anyone else doing such a thing? I don't think this is normal and I doubt anyone else does this. I'd value some advice for the next time I talk to her.

I'd just like to point out that I do not in any way think all Wiccans do this. I know that this is probably just her and a few of her friends (not mine). I just want the next time I talk to her, I have the advice of someone from her religion to back me up.

Never even heard of Christmas Evil. Being pagan (slight differences between me and wiccian but I can sit under the same umbrella) I wouldn't celebrate this either. I prefer more festive celebrations.
If she is in fact wiccian, doesn't she know Christmas is just a variation of Yule and therefore pagan? Is she celebrating this holiday for anti-material reasons? She could also be a satanist in a wiccian circle.
I like Moosemas better. It's a moveable holiday where anything silly is let in.

A Wiccan studying for their "1st Degree" is supposed to learn in depth details about other faiths and religions to better understand the world around them.

Some do this and some skip this very important step.

Many people approach their faith as a refuge from whatever they once were exposed to. In this they feel either ashamed or angry at that particular, whatever it is.

Your friend needs to look closely at what she is doing.... it is not productive and in the Wiccan sense it "raises negativity" in the circle they are in. What she is doing is adding a very negative element to a normally positive atmosphere. In some circles that aspect is known as "poisoning the energies of the Circle".

Simple rule for any faith;
What brings negativity faster than anything is something negative.
What brings a positive feeling is something positive.

No I've never heard of this at all, I think that she has turned her dislike for Christians into something with negative connotations.

One of the rules in Wicca, is simply to Celebrate Life, another is to Honor the Goddess and God.

And there are no rituals done on Christmas Eve, there is usually a Yule Celebration on Dec. 21 it is a celebration of the ending of winter/death or sleep and welcoming or calling the sun the return of spring/new life/ birth.

That is not a Wiccan practice. The thing with Wicca is a lot of people claiming to be Wiccan are not. They are people who know nothing about our religion and do whatever they like and call it Wicca.

Young people especially sometimes to rebel they will call themselves Wiccans without ever having studied it or took the time to see what we are about.

We do not worship the devil and we do not even beleive in the devil. We are a tolerant religion believing that all religions and spiritual paths are right for the follower of that path.

We follow the harm none rede. We do not condemn or judge anothers religion.

Goodness! It sounds to me like she's bitter and angry and invented a ritual to vent her frustration.

You might gently remind her that it is not the Christian deities or symbols that are causing her frustration, but the people who arrogantly misuse the Christian ideas.

This kind of ritual will never remove the taint of unpleasantness from culture. She would be better off performing a ritual that would center her energy and bring her inner peace and the strength to cope, instead.

The most successful spells are those that help us change inside by refocusing our own energies. This kind of thing won't help her and might only draw back to her the negativity she is celebrating.

I understand her feelings, believe me, but this is not the way to heal.

If she doesn't stop, try not to worry about it, I'm sure she'll grow out of it in time.

None of the Wiccans I know celebrate Christmas Evil or have any practices that mock Christianity or Christmas. That's not their way. Sounds like a silly child who is getting back at Christians who have persecuted or annoyed her.

They are taking their beliefs to a dark place. Wicca is a natural religion, grounded in the earth. All living things (including stars, planets, humans, animals, plants, rocks) are regarded as having a spirit. Many Wiccan rituals deal with bringing harmony and healing to nature. Wiccans tend to share a great concern for the environment.

Also they need to remember the "Three-Fold Law" .. the law states "All good that a person does to another returns three fold in this life; harm is also returned three fold" -- This belief strongly motivates each Wiccan to avoid attempting to dominate, manipulate, control, or harm another person.

This girl is not a wiccan. Wiccans do not believe in this concept of evil, and believe in the tenet of harming none. Just as there are strange people in every faith who do things under that label that are against the tenets of that faith (for example: Jim Jones, David Koresh of the "christian" faith), this girl can call herself whatever she likes, but it doesn't make her Wiccan.
