I made some homemade chili but I got carried away with the tomato paste and tomato sauce. Now it's too thick and resembles a spicy tomato sauce for spaghetti. How can I save it and turn it back into chili?

Add more chili(beef) or take out some of the tomato sauce.

Well your tomato paste & sauce are both thickening agents so first thing I would do to reverse it would be add more water! As far as what else to add I would simply start there. Do not get carried away adding more, meat, beans, etc- It could end up being too much! Now I am not sure how your flavor is right now but once you add more water (quantity depending on how much extra sauce and paste you added?) you may water down the chili and dilute the flavor. So important thing is to first add the water, enough to acheive desired consistancy-even a bit more watery whereas chili will thicken back up again- let it simmer for a while and then re-taste. If anything add more seasoning if needed. It should be real simple to bring back.

Drain the sauce off.

Put the meat and solids back into the pot. Add a can of no sodium/low sodium beef broth.

Then put the tomato sauce in a separate pan and boil it until it reduces by half and is thicker. Add the reduced tomato sauce to your chili until it looks like chili again, and throw away the sauce you don't use (or freeze it for another batch of chili for later)

Good luck....that is really all you can do without just starting completely over.

water it down some. You then may need to add more chili spices, like chili powder. Otherwise it will taste like the tomato sauce.

Add more water and chilli seasoning. And in the future don't use tomato paste use tomato sauce and stewed (if you like chunks of tomatoes) or diced tomatoes so it doesn't get thick.

You know what they say, you can always add more but ya can't take it out. i would make another batch and not put any tomato in it and then mix the 2 together. put half of it in the freezer for next time.
I personally do not put tomato product in my chili.

A bit of water and a few other ingredients from the original recipe? That's the only thing I can think. It might make it a double portion... or you can claim that it is a secret family recipe of EXTRA THICK chili. ^_^

Just add tomatoe juice until you get the desired texture and thinness you want. When you do that you'll have to add more of your spices as well to accommodate for the flavour and dilution.
