Lots of good tips here. Whatever you end up doing... please remember not to use any tinsel on your tree if you have cats... could have tragic results.
Merry Christmas!

I've always put the tree up a few days without decorations and discouraged them from the tree same as if they were scratching furniture. Shoo them away if they start to climb, clap hands or use a spray of water.
After their initial curiosity they only wanted to sit under the branches and didn't try any climbing or batting the ornaments. Do avoid putting any ornaments on the very bottom of the tree that would tempt them to bat around. Praise them when they lay under the tree without messing with it.

This is going to sound weird but I have heard numerous people say to put tin foil or orange peels were ever you don't want them to be. What I do to keep my cat out of the tree is everytime I see him in it I spray him with a water bottle! works like a charm!

When my cat would get into our tree I took a spray bottle and put water in it and added a couple teaspoons of black pepper to it and sprayed it on the tree. He hasn't been near the xmas tree since.

The best way to stop cats from doing things is to squirt them with water, they hate to get wet. Get a spray bottle and when they do something wrong give them a squirt.
