Dear Sir:
I was unable to attend the College's General Assembly on [date] because I was scheduled to work and was unable to reschedule my shift. I apologize for missing this important event and will do my best to change my shift next time and work on my time management. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
[your name].

Tell the associate dean the truth (there's no other solution). And if it was such an important issue at the school to attend the general assembly, you had best hope that you were actually working during that time and not just trying to get some relaxation time between school and work, etc. I've been a working student, and it's definitely hard! But you have to do your best to abide by the guidelines set by your school. Best thing next time would be to speak with the associate dean before the assembly to see what arrangements could be made. Perhaps ask if there's notes on what topics are going to be covered at the assembly so that you can be aware of what's discussed. Take an interest in the future and let him know that you definitely want to stay up with your school work, but you also need the job to cover expenses.

Expalin your situation and desire for self improvement by earning income to attend a major university after school thus bettering yourself,... oooooor

Remind him in the letter that when a vehicle is on fire,. the paint has a tendancy to peel off...not saying you'd torch is car or something,. just remnding him,. since it would be a real shame,.. and a day away from school would certainly allow an opportunity,...

Either way,... he'll get the picture

Actually that sounds not too bad. Tell him you had to work. You shouldn't be suspended because you attend every single class and only miss when there is an emergency or work. (You do attend every class, right?)
