Another suggestion, once you figure out what he is into, you can create a theme that is both pleasing and educational. For our boys, we painted the 3 walls a shade of blue, with a "Feature Wall" painted in a blue/green colour. Our boys are 4 and love watching Mighty Machines and playing cars and trucks. We then printed kids colouring pages all related to cars, trucks, cranes, forklifts,etc...printed them on transparencies, then borrowed an overhead projector from the public library and cast the images on the walls and painted away! For the girls room, we used the same concept, painting a big castle and fairies and things like that. For the playroom, we have an outdoor activities theme with a park, fishing, skating, sledding, swimming, etc...very easy when using an overhead and very cheap. Our children love their walls, and it encourages imaginative play as well. Kids colouring pages are free online, and buying a paint pod of different colours was very inexpensive. You dont have to be an artist, just have to trace the images on the walls and then paint them in. We especially like to play "I Spy" as there are MANY different ways to play, like matching up the fish and fishing rod for example.

I would do it in colors like blue, red, green, and yellow for a boy. Maybe using trucks and cars or sports as a theme. I have a girl so I have no experience with boys but a lot of my friends have boys and that is how their rooms are decorated.

I've always decorated my boys rooms with primary colors. Well, just bright bold colors. Stimulates the brain. I'd stay away from pastels for sure.

I would avoid cartoon charactors...they grow out of that too fast. What is he into? For example if he is into fish, make his room look like a big fish bowl. I agree that bright colors are best for children. It is very stimulating for them. But, since you say he is very active, if bedtime is a problem maybe more muted colors would be your best bet.

follow the "theme" of his comforter and room accessories. if he has mainly reds and dark blues, then maybe a "nautical" painting would work.
bottom line...you need to find out what his bedroom looks like, so the painting will work in his space.
take care!

I would stick with sports or cars. We just changed my nephews room from balls to cars. Added a track rug to the floor as well as cars to race on it.
He loves it, he is 3.5 years old.
