Are inflatable kayaks trustworthy enough to trust on open water. No white water stuff, just far enough from shore to be worrisome about having to swim home. Any specifics to look for before buying?

As long as you are wearing a life jacket, it should be fine on lakes or gentle rivers. I definitely would not use one on whitewater or in the ocean. If the kayak does get punctured, it will need to be fixed but won't sink out from underneath you. Just so you know, inflatable kayaks are a lot of fun, especially compared to their price, but they do not handle anywhere near as well as a kayak made of solid materials. If you want it for fun at the beach, it is great, but if you want to take it into the back-country invest in something more up to the task.

i don't know about inflatable kayaks, but the plastic, sit-on-top ones are nice. you can get one or two-person versions. Mainstream Kayaks has some nice ones that aren't outrageously priced.

I had one and really never trusted it myself but it never let me down. You just have to be VERY carefull becouse it was easier to flip and easy to POP.
