Beef- cuz they believe in reincarnation and retribution, and they believe that killing an animal is inhumane. so usually if they are really religious, they are vegetarians.
starfruit: i've never heard of that! i've seen people putting starfruit as an offering when they do their daily prayers.

No no no...all u people are thinking of indian hinduism. in Zen Buddhism (practiced by japenese and chinese) we believe that killing cows is wrong because it is a life form. We are killing a living being. Starfruit is something we eat because we are vegetarians. But most believers arent vegetarians. Only people who choose and the Monks and Nuns. Vegetarian doesnt taste to bad either. In Tibetan buddhism, they live in the mountains where it is difficult to plant crops. That is an exception. In all buddhism, we believe that we can only "Do or eat things to survive". In Buddhism we believe in impermenance, and karma. Impermanence is the fact that everything leaves existence one time in life. Karma is "What comes around goes around". If we kill the cow, the bad karma can come and when we die and reincarnate, we could be reincarnated into a lower life form. We can become an animal, a demon, a god, a hungry ghost, or a human once more.
In Buddhsim, We believe that everyone dies. When we die, we come back as another living being. There are 3 different places. Underworld, Human world, and Heaven World. Demons, Humans, and Gods all die. When you become a Buddha (enlightened being) you can escape the "Cycle of Rebirth adn Deaths". This world is not really here. This is just a figment of the mind. When we can awaken ourselves, we will be in Nirvana. That is when we can give up the physical things like jewelry and items. That is why monks only travel with 2 robes and a shaved head(they think that the hair is distracting beacuse it is impermanent). When we become enlightened we wake up and are only connected to the earth spiritually. We dont have to eat or sleep. We just have to help others acchieve enlgihtenment
Three Vows Of Buddhahood
1. To Prevent all Evil
2. To Help Others
3. To Help other Sentient Beings Acchieve Enlightenment
also, we can drink milk and eat eggs because they arent exactly killing. Most Buddhists avoid eggs because they "couldve held life at one time". You are not allowed to bring "Outlawed" food into a temple
REMEMBER! Buddhism and Hinduism both came from India. Just the Zen and Tibetan Buddhism has changed because of its mix with Chinese, Tibetan, and Japenese Culture!!!!!

I personally avoid beef because it's hard to digest. After eating beef, I just want to sit on the couch and feel like a big heavy lump. veggies are much easier to digest. After eating veggies, I feel energized. It's a practical consideration, has nothing to do with religion/beliefs.
Also, beef looks gross to me.
I don't know what starfruit is.

I would say beef is prohibited in hinduism and bhuddism because it signifies the holy cow.
Starfruit contains gelatin. Gelatin can be derived from animal and/or plant extract. Depends which company uses what type of gelatin. Therefore, hindu and bhuddist, even some muslims (if its not halal or kosher) avoid any products that may contain animal derivatives. Gelatin is in Jello, yogurt, even cappicunos.
So its not a bhuddist avoidance, just read the ingredients thats in your food, you will be surprised what you put in your body.
Some hindus go as extreme to avoid all milk products as well: yogurt, sour cream, and so forth. Some are vegetarians aviod all contact from poultry or animal products. Yogurt also contains enyzmes that come from animal fatty acids that muslims dont eat because its not kosher.
On the contrary, suffering and offering is a part of bhuddist philosophy, so eating meat is not prohibited in the religion and they can have chicken and seafood. They dont have to be vegeterians.

The Buddha did not advocate vegeterianism for the monks. He did advise the monks to avoid the following types of meat:
Humans,elephants,horses,dogs,snakes,lions,tigers,leopards,bears,hyenas.
The Buddha did not mention anything about vegetarianism for Buddhist in his teaching. He declared that one should not make use of meat if is :SEEN,HEARD OR SUSPECTED to have been killed on purpose for a monk.He allows the monks meat that is pure in three respects:NOT SEEN,HEARD OR SUSPECTED to have been killed on purpose for a monk.
Vegetarianism alone does not help a person to cultivate humane qualities. There are kind, humble, polite and religious people amongst non-vegetatians.
People who criticize Buddhists who eat meat do not understand the Buddhist attitude towards food.A living being needs nourishment. We eat to live.If one craves for any kind of food,or kills to satisfy one's greed for meat ,this is wrong. If one eats moderately without greed but merely to sustain the physical body,he/she is practising self-restraint.The destruction of greed should be the primary aim,not the kind of food that is taken.
'Neither meat, nor fasting, nor nakedness, nor shaven heads ,nor matted hair, nor dirt, nor rough skins, nor fire-worshipping,nor all the penances here in this world, nor hymns, nor oblation nor sacrifice, nor feasts of the season, will purify a man overcome with doubt'
The Buddha.
