I am assisting a lady at a dinner function in Texas Sunday evening at a plantation. This is my first temp job. Would it be tactfull for me to bring a snack dish to it? Like one of my banana bread loaf or some cokies? Or would it look like I'm trying too hard? I've had outstanding reviews from my bacon & cheese egg bread, and it's hard enough trying to get a job out here that I would enjoy.
I'm also hosting a game developers meeting/potluck the day before, and I might get a whim to do some cooking there as well. But I don't want to exhaust myself.

This is just for one day and she might hire me back if she likes me. I've done catering for 5 years in the military as resupply and am tired of serving foods; and don't want to make my favorite hobby a job.

I've never done catering in the civilian world, so I don't know if I'll like it. Thaught about a culinary degree for vocational rehab to extend my own skills, not sure if I want a career in it.

FYI: I wasn't a cook, I was a truck driver.

Don't surprise the caterer with food at the last minute. If you have a great recipe you'd like to add to his/her menu, make arrangements to have your boss preview it at another time.

Business people put their name and reputation behind what they serve and sell. If this is your first job with this person/company, you are an unknown. They have no idea if you can cook well, or if you kitchen is hygenic.

Initiative is great, just now when it puts people on the spot.

If you are working for the caterer then I would imagine the menu has already been set.
Catering is like an exact science everything is planned where things will be set and what food goes where weeks in advance.
even something like cookies or banana bread might throw a monkey wrench into the plan.
If you've never helped cater before my advice is to just help watch and learn.
Catering is exciting and fun but can be very stressfull at times.
Just hang out,do your job and get to know your employer..and eventually ask if you can incorporate some of your things into the menu.
Good luck and have fun.

While the thought is nice, unfortunately it's a no-no. Just show up in your black and whites (or whatever she told you to wear) and just work. That's how the temping for catering/banquet servers works here in California at least. You might get a chance to talk to the lady a bit, but when I was temping talking to the guests was frowned upon unless you were giving directions to the restroom or saying "excuse me" or something, but no chit-chat.

But have fun doing it, and smile a lot! It's a lot of fun!

the type of people who hire a caterer in my area would not appreciate the effort and thoughtfulness of such a gesture. you were hired to do a job, just show up and do it. DO, however bring a wine opener and a pen and a snack for yourself. If you wanted to share with the other staff that would be ok, just not the client.
