Hi, I have got a male staffordshire bull terrier that I have had for nearly 5 years now. He is still eliminating in his crate, day and night, he even seems to wait sometimes until he has got in it before he will do a poo. It is getting to the stage now where he is always covered in urine as he is lying in it and then he spends the next hour cleaning his fur, I am bathing him about once or twice a week to get rid of the smell.
Does anyone have any suggestions about how I can get him to stop this, I don't tell him off when he has done it, I just clean it up. I go outside with him and give him praise and treats when he goes to the toilet outside, I have even bought him a DAP (dog appeasing pheromone) diffuser to try and stop it but nothing seems to be working.
If anyone has any suggestions at all, I would be very greatful (and i'm sure my dog will be too)
I have also got another dog of the same breed/age and he has never had this problem.
Thanks again.

Wow and pit bulls are so smart too....
Get your dog a new crate and see if this helps? I sure hope no one sees this dog covered in his own poo you know how peeps are about calling the law in when you have these dogs.
I used to call mine a Staffordshire because peeps did not know them by this name lol!
Since he has done this all his life and you have never put your foot down it is not "strange" for him but normal. As a pup this kind of living conditions could have been normal to him? Change kennels and start shaming him.
Be being complacent about this the dog feels it is OK. Critters take there cues from us, if we do not say it is wrong then it is right. He feels he is doing nothing wrong.
You have to be top dog..
Good luck

If the crate is too large this may pose a problem. Also, I've had a dog do the same thing and called numerous trainers to see what could be done and all have said that it sounds most likely that it's a behavioral thing. Hopefully this is not your case but I was told that it would cost a lot of money to try and fix the problem and it may not even help. It could be if you just got the other dog, your other one may be a little jealous of him. It could be that too but I would advise calling your vet and maybe some trainers on this. It could be that it's just a health problem and the vet could be able to tell you this. if not, then hopefully with some extra training, your dog could overcome it.

I think you need to take the dog to the Vet. and see if there is no problem with him first. Then try a small crate for him and do not feed him late and night. Try feeding him early eveing and make sure that he does his job outside.

Generally dogs don't do this unless their crate is too large, might he need a smaller one? Ask the vet about how to cure this, if he's marked the crate as a place to eliminate in you may have to change his sleeping arrangements.

i think you need to call your vet. there's a med that someone told me about that you can use at night and it will basically shut down the dogs "system" for about 6 hours. i don't know anything else about it though.

You need a smaller crate.
