I just had to have four suspicious moles removed (not a fun experience!). I live in the far north, where the sun rarely comes out, and the ONLY real sun exposure I got was from tanning beds. Now I may have melanoma - a very serious skin cancer that there is NO cure for. If it is melanoma and I was too late in having it removed, chances are I'm going to die. I am only 21 years old.
The American Cancer Society says that women who use tanning beds more than once a month are 55 percent more likely to develop malignant melanoma.
And yes, tanning beds cause sunspots and wrinkles just like the sun does. Their rays are actually more concentrated!
Instead of tanning, use a spray on tanner or a tanning moisturizer. The Jergens moisturizing bronzer is great and doesn't make you orange. There are also salons that just do spray on tanning. You can come out looking like you've spent the week in Hawaii!

Yes, they are very bad. I'm 33 and used tanning beds heavily when I was a teenager into my 20's. My skin looks like hell now! I am also at risk of developing skin cancer much more than if I never went fake and baking. Now, they have those spray tanning machines that all the celebrities like Paris Hilton use and they're not much more expensive. I would try spray tanning before using a tanning bed. Remeber, both tanning beds and outdoor tanning are very bad for you! People actually die in their 20's of skin cancer. Why would you want to risk it? If you must fake and bake, follow the guidelines for your skin type. Also, natural skin tones are beautiful, why fry your skin?

Present day tanning beds are safer than those previously available. Whether or not they are bad for you depends upon how much you use them. As with all things moderation is good advice. Personally I like tanning beds I had one in my home for years. If you spend too much time in the sun or on a tanning bed your risk of skin cancer and melanoma is increased but no one can tell you how much is too much exposure. The number of treatments to obtain a good tan and your risk of skin cancer and melanoma with sun or tanning bed exposure is linked to the amount of melanin in your skin. Those with darker skin tan faster and have a lower risk of skin cancer and melanoma and those with the lightest skin have the most problems. There are those who will say that any amount of sun exposure or tanning is bad but drinking tap water is sometime harmful as well. If you do not overdo it I say enjoy.

They are not healthy!! They cause skin damage and can lead to skin cancer. A tan is a sign of skin damage. Use a fake tanner if you want to look tan.

They have ultra violet rays just like the sun and they can do the same damage. I would stay away from them.
