Of course you have a choice, but not really. Let's examine this. You're born Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, whatever. You're raised that way and your parents, friends, coworkers, classmates, most everyone is a supporter of your religion (generally, I know, I am currently an american living in Cairo). People don't allow you to question your religion much, and why would you? it's all you know, everyone has told you "this is the truth" since the only truth you know is the one you were born into and raised by. So even if you have the choice, a big issue is that you probably won't as that's what you believe to be true. I am more liberal cuz of my area I was raised in and family, but others the opposite because of an opposite environment. Sure you have a choice, but honestly how many people would be able to see another truth beyond the one that is so cemented into their foundation of reality? Second, from my experience here, those who convert, from either Islam to Xtian or the opposite, it is tantamount to social suicide and treason. Yes it's legal, but socially acceptable? no, this means you lose your only family, all your friends, monitary support and means of getting a job and making a life for yourself. Can it be done? Yes. Has it been done? Yes, but what percent would risk all that based on the idea that maybe one religion is more suitable than another? Most people aren't even encouraged to question Islam or Xtianity, so why would they even be interested in other religions. so to say "oh, we only have a 1% apostacy rate in Islam which shows how faithful people are" is not at all logical. It just shows that nobody would dare leave and face such horrible, harsh consequences. Just like in any fair election, you'll never find the results being 90 or even 80 percent in favor of one side or the other cuz people have differing opinions. In very obviously oppressed, corrupt elections, this is often a tell (90% or above for one side or another). So, no, you really have no choice but people like to think they do.

I reverted and became a muslim from a non religious background. Everyone makes their choice and I am glad i decided to become muslim. To all those people who dislike muslims i ask you to actually learn about the people and not just go by what you hear and read in the papers and watch on tv...99% of it is false. Actually meet a muslim person and get to know them then i guarantee your opinion of the religion and people will change. Feel free to contact me and I will answer your questions. You can choose not to be a muslim..everyone has their own choice but i dont know why you would want to give up on your religion.

Most Muslims are born into it just like any other religion. Some Muslims chose to convert from other religions. Choosing not to be a Muslim if you were one is called apostasy. And in some places in the world other Muslims don't take too kindly to people who become apostates. It can rage from people wanting to kill you to losing your friends and family who will shun you.
Check out the website apostatesofislam.com to find out the viewpoints and experiences of people who were Muslim and decided it was not for them.

Alot of Muslims become Muslims due to their Birth parents making the decision.

Some are converted to Muslim through marriage etc.

Some Adult Muslims convert to other faiths although this isnt easy. Ive read testimonies online that ex Muslims can sometimes experience physical violence, being disowned by family or miraculously members of the family following suite.

Alhamdulillah, Praise be to Allah, I am born into a Muslim family.
I grew up in a Muslim home.
I was given an Islamic education along with a secular education. (in the afternoons, I used to learn about Islam from age 6 to 12)
Before uni I spent a year part-time at a Madressah (religious institution).
I am married to a Muslim man.
I can say with gratitude to my Creator, that I CHOOSE to remain a Muslim forever, Insha-Allah, Aameen!

Its allowed in some countries and not allowed in some of them. I live in a free country, if i wanna convert there wont be any problem for me. I was born to be a Muslim and in a religious family. But i had some dark times in doubt then i searched Islam more deeply and everything became more clear in my mind. Trust me you wont lose anything if you read the Quran and Prophet Muhammads(pbuh) hadeeths objectively, try to read it and see it with your own eyes. Islam is the most peaceful and logical religion of all.

Once the person takes the oath "La Illah Ha Illah Lah, Mohammed Rasool Allah"then he or she is a Muslim. It is true that they are born and raised to believe but they still have a choice to make like any other human.

I was born a Muslim, very happy with it, will never change it for any other.
It is better to ask scholars what will happen if a Muslim converts, I am not sure, while I doubt that he will be killed. Islam should not be forced, this is what God said in the Quran. If you don't want it, God does not want you to pretend.
