I disconnected and plugged in again. It stopped moving. What causes this to happen? Running Windows XP/ Firefox.

Ran numerous security programs; not a virus or hacker. My System is clean. Track Point has always been OFF. Has happened on other computers and w/different mice. Tried another mouse pad. Will report back once I clean the mouse. Thank you all.

I have had this problem in the past also... In my case it stopped moving after 3-5 seconds.

It is caused by preasure close to the touch pad. If you rest your hands close to the pad it seems that the case warps a little, when you lift your hand the case 'relaxes' causeing some preasure on the mouse pad... the pad intreprets this and moves the cursor as if you were touching the pad.

If it moves all the time you probably either need a new pad or it has shifted or something in the case. Ensure thatt there is no dirt / stuff stuck along the edges. ALso make sure that all the screws are tight on the bottom...

good luck

First two are both possible answers. A hacker can use a program to take control of your computer, like networking.
I had this problem, my cursor would begin to drift, and sometimes jump around, it was my Track Point going out on an IBM. I turned the track point off and now use a Mouse.

RUN A VIRUS SCAN AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS, SOUNDS LIKE A HACKER. Check what programs are opened by the mouse

I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html
The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html
