Ask questions (you're off to a good start w/ Answers)....when you taste something you like...ask the person how it is made (even in a restaurant they will explain to you). Ask friends to show you how to make certain dishes. Some people decide to focus on baking (in the oven) anything in the and others on cooking (primarily on stove-top or grill). There are many good websites with video demonstrations, i.e. www.foodnetwork.com , www.yahoofood.com, www.allrecipes.com.

But, as many others mention...nothing takes the place of practicing...and being okay w/ failing or not being perfect.

This said, start with recipes that are relatively easy, i.e. chicken marsala vs. a souffle.

MOST important...have FUN! Cooking should be relaxing and creative...

Enjoy!

It's all about experience, as she said. Practice, learning, and experimentation.

She's right about foodnetwork.com. It has a bunch of easy, simple, healthy and beautiful food ideas.
Thee's a ton of cookbooks that have simple to elaborate recepies I go to BHG.com or Allrecepies.com when I have a whim.
Sometimes experimenting is good. See how a roast comes out when you try a diffrent cooking technique, or add a little something to a simple recepie. Try beef or chicken broth instead of water for your rice or ramen. Toss in some cheese here and there, there's always a substitute for butter.

The Betty Crocker Cookbook is great. The recipes are simple and basic, and it includes info on how to cook the basics, like how long to grill a steak or roast a chicken.

Practice, practice, practice.

Stick to the recipes exactly at first, and make adjustments to personal taste after you have mastered the basics. Make notes on the recipes when you change something so you can remember it later.

cooking alongside others, watching cooking shows, and just experimenting at home. Start with recipes with a few ingredients, learn specific techniques and meaning of cooking terms.

The best way to learn is to love the art of cooking. Cookbooks will be nothing if you don't like to learn.

Get a cookbook of simple recipes and follow it. As you get more confident in your abilities you can start to season the food to your taste. You might also get a more advanced cookbook.
