I got to Grade 4 on the Flute, then I gave up. I took it up again later and got a lot better, I'd like to get to and pass Grade 8 and Grade 8 music theory so I could got on to further study some day. Does anyone know if I have to do all the other grades first? Or can I just skip them and go straight to Grade 8? Or is there a different way of applying for mature students?

Thanks for your answers guys, very helpful. I'm currently learning Godards Allegretto and Idylle, I've got a couple of other favourites like Faures Sicilienne and the Dance Of The Blessed Sprits by Gluck, if anyone has any more nice pieces to recommend then that would be great! Grade 6 standard or so..... my favourite flute piece is Cecile Chaminades Concertino, a beautiful piece of music but very demanding! A little beyond me for the time being I think!

No, you don't have to take them in order. I started with grade 3 (all for piano), then grade 5, then grade 5 theory, and then grade 6, and now I'm preparing for grade 8.

All you need is grade 5 theory for grade 8.

In Britain the only requirement is that you take your Grade 5 theory (and pass it!) before going onto Grades 6-8. Go for it! It's such a nice instrument to play, what pieces are you plaing at the moment? I really like palyin Romance by Saint-Saens, it has everything fast flashy bits throughout virtually the whole range of the flute and a lovely slow low bit too, mmm. Do you play piccolo too? Many flautists who take it further play piccolo too. I always wanted to play it and then my husband bought me one, it's SO cool!

You can skip the practical grades and go straight to Grade 8 - BUT you can't take Grades 6-8 without passing Grade 5 theory first.

So, mug up on the theory, take (and pass!) grade 5, then set your sights on Grade 8 flute.

Good luck!

If you are in Canada and talking about the Royal Conservatory program then, no, you don't need to take the other grades first but you do need to know all of the technique from them so you'd have to do your research. Also, grade two rudiments (theory) goes with grade eight to complete your certificate. There is some great repetoire in the grade eight program. Enjoy!

It depends on the ensemble. She may share a chair with someone (not literally, of course) or she may have an unwritten harmony part. You should talk to the director of the ensemble. I sing, so me and the two other singers who are in the band swap around if its a solo. When I played the saxophone I shared first chair, and I was put there because me and the other first chair were a year older than the other two saxophonists.

Don't see why not if you are capable of passing. Good luck.
