Brisnet have revealed that up to November 30th 2006, Garrett Gomez has "won" $21,039,747 in prize - money (purses). How much of this does he receive? How much of any prize money won does the owner get? Any differences between the US and Europe?

Trainers will receive a percentage of the winnings from a race, ranging from 5.44% to 5.89% of the value of the race for a winner - obviously the percentage drops as the horse finishes further down the field.

Jockeys receive a flat rate fee of £92.65 per ride for a flat race or £126.52 per ride for a jump race (not as stated by tonyflair2002). On top of this he can claim between 4% and 4.6% of the value of a race for a winner (percentages decrease if the horse finishes further down the field).

Many jockeys are retained by owners or certain trainers and will be paid an annual salary for this, as well as receiving gifts from grateful owners.

Top jockeys may earn a lot of money, but don't forget that the young jockeys that are just starting out may only get 2 or 3 rides a week so it is not a lot of money from their point of view.

Flat jockeys earn approx £25 per ride. This is the official rate under J C Rules - but will vary in an upward spiral. N.H. jockeys get less (around £18) - again this will vary. they also receive 10% of all winnings. So, if they ride the winner of a £100,000 race - they receive £10,000. In addition the owners usually give a "present". So, not too bad overall. Most top jockeys will average 5 or 6 rides a day - 7 days a week. Some jockeys are on a "retainer" for certain stables - this fee can range from £2,000 to £25,000 per season. Hope this helps you undertsand the situation.

There is huge differences from Country to Country. In some countries the jockeys receives PAY and part of the purses. In some countries the pay is neglible and they have to survive on purses only.

In South Africa the jockey gets 7% of the purse. The owner gets the largest portion of the purse.

It seems HK pays the best for Jockeys.

It depends on how good the horse it. If the horse winds loads of events and the owner gets loads of money he is likely to reward the jokey and trainer with a large bonus.

If you train/ride a great horse you'll earn loads! Most don't earn a lot though.

in america, any purse at any track per se, gets the winning owner 60% in which he pays the trainer and jockey 10% each. the jockey then pays 10% to his agent who has to book his/her riding assignments for him/her. so mr gomez basically earned 2.1 mil, and his agent got $210k of that. not too shabby!!

I would presume that they get a certain percentage of the horses winnings from the trainer.
