No uniforms, no standards, Kill babies, kill women , kill the old! Hide in caves hide behind women. melt into the general population. Yea tough to fight I suppose. they are cowards nothing more, with a little support the US/UK forces would send them to where they sent the Nazi's. Only the Nazi's were more manly

The Royal Marines think so and so too does the British Army. You would have thought that this message had got through when the CIA and Brits were assisting the Mujaheddin during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. I distinctly remember Sandy Gaul going off on a trek with these men and thinking how warrior brave they looked and behaved. The Taliban for all that has been said about them are probably amongst the world's fiercest and best fighters. I continue to hope and pray for a good outcome to all of this but fear it will not be the case.

The bottom line is that the USA and other coalition fighters play by the rules. The terrorists have no rules, kill Innocent civilians with car bombs and capture and behead people for sport.

We have the military might to turn that entire country into a parking lot for the worlds biggest Wal Mart in less than a week. But we cant. We must win the hearts and minds of the people before we can win the battles.

The western hemisphere has only one formidable enemy and that is the delusion of its political / industrial power over the rest of the world. This delusion started in earnest when renaissance intellectuals pronounced the end of the dark age and the beginning of a new age of rationalism and enlightenment - neither of which occurred in any realistic form other than in self defeating scientific progress.
Science - progress - industrialisation - consumption - global warming domino effect. Now out of control.
This delusion was so strong that it created an educational system based on the arrogant belief its values and ideas needed to be exported to the rest of the world as the Empirical Standard for Thought and Religion and it proceeded from there to build institutions of power and control to make sure the rest of the world was subjugated to the Western version of split definitives.
The idea for example that you can send a handful of psychopaths into a sovereign country thousands of years old and transform their ideology and culture (by getting rid of their own leader) using the sophistry of military and ideological magic is an idea that stems from the delusion of humanism, the black bedrock of renaissance philosophy and rationale.
When US and UK forces eventually leave the region with their tails between their legs amid a clamour of media hype oozing with face-saving plaudits using words like 'success' and 'progress' and 'well we got rid of a dictator', the formidable enemy of delusion makes a Jackass of the West.
Shakespeare was right, the delusion of power is the Jackass of every age.

Bear in mind the West can kill hundreds of Taliban in a contact but this is not big news, if however 1 or 2 Western troops are killed, then this gets headlines. They never really inflict any significant military losses on the West only political ones.

The Taliban are on their own turf in Afghansitan, and have the backing of a lot of the civilian population which the US/UK forces don't have. Also, the Taliban feel they are fighting to free their country (when in reality they want to enslave it) which gives them an edge over foreign troops.

They have had funding and support from the US for years and have been trained by the CIA in guerilla warfare and know the terrain really well. The forces in Afghanistan have done nothing to foster support from the local community which is what they need to achieve to get rid of the Taliban and they need to support other strategies such as eradication of poverty, education and foster a feeling of mutual respect instead of just taking the military route.

People seem to forget the occupation of Afganistan by the Russians, they went in 1979, and came out in 1988, in that time they had losses amounting to 14,453 servicemen. Eventually even the Russians had to admit that they had no control over the populous and pulled out. Let's hope the US, and Brit forces don't let the dead mount as high, or the length of time spent there be as long as the Russians, history is meant to teach us something. Our leaders don't seem to want to remember, past failures.

Yes they are a formidable enemy, even with good equiptment the British and U.S are not a match for their passion.
It is their country, history and people. They are fighting to protect what they believe in.
Whether you like it or not you will never beat or silence a nation who truly believes in what they are fighting for.

When your willing to blow yourself up and die,. technology is somewhat irrelevant...

Sure we have great technology, but we also try to abide by rules that they don't,.. you know,.. try (notice i said try) not to kill civilians, or not use them as human shields,. not behead our prisoners, you know stuff like that...

For a good overview of what I am talking about,. nothing is more relevant than the pyschology refferred to in the Movie Apocolypse now... basically Marlen Brando informs Martin Sheens character that the only way to win the war (nam) was to fight it the same way they vietnamese were... In other words, if you try to maintain a moral standard in battle,. you are handicapping yourself especially if you are fighting someone who has loose morals at best...

If we resulted to a simple search and destroy where we swept the entire region and blew the living **** out of any and all we suspected, and waged a vicuous and terrible pyscological campaign to shock and horrify the enemy,... I guaruntee things would setttle down.... the country would be in ruin,.. even more of the world would hate us,... but it would be more effective thats for sure...

But like I said,... we try to play with rules,.. that makes it really hard,...

But how exactly are we imcompitent,. yes,.. people are dieing,. but,.. uh,.. we are in there house,... its not like they have overrun the united states know what I'm saying?
