I assume from your question that you are outside the UK, and so will not be able to dial one of the 118 xxx numbers.

There is an authoritative list at www.thephonebook.bt.com, which lists residential numbers as well as business.

In 'the old days' it used to be just one BT number of 192 - but this is no longer available.

There are a now a large number of directory enquiry phone numbers - they all start with 118.

BTs is 118 500 - but you can also look up a number for FREE on their website:

http://www.118500.com/services.asp
.

The cheapest number to use is 0161 951 0017.

It is a standard 'geographic' number so is included in 'free minutes' on mobiles and landline call packages.

Much cheaper than any of the 118 services.

From outside the UK, +44 161 951 0017.

118 118 or
118 500 for example.

There's many enquiry lines beginning with 118.

I would just use an online site such as www.192.com or www.yell.co.uk. These other numbers charge a small fortune and you get through to foreigners who don't even understand the name of what you're asking for!
