you are right, it has become a commercial holiday for businesses to make money, but there are people who still, remember why we are celebrating it, who do their best to raise their children, in faith. i used to tell my kids about Santa clause, because i didn't know any better. alot of people don't know the danger of telling kids about things such as Santa and easterbunny, toothfairy etc.....our kids believe this stuff, then find out that its a lie...then we have to tell them we were serious when we told them about God...Go figure that one.....Ive seen this alot. but this time of year brings out the best in people(most people). as for churches encouraging this, i think they just don't see what the harm is, not all churches encourage it, i know my church doesn't, my pastor calls Santa, satan clause(LOL)

He's not a myth so much as a fable, if you're going for literary types. A myth explains something. A fable teaches a message. Santa doesn't explain anything, but he encourages children to be patient arround the holiday season.
I fully intend to raise my child with the true story of St. Nicholas. No, not the big fat guy in the red suit, the Bishop who was imprisioned for being too passionate about proper Church doctrine at Nicea. The man who defended widdows and children, and was named a saint, and lives in the hearts and minds of the faithful as a true example of a servant of God.

Christian celebrate the birth of Christ, and that is our focus, all the rest is just an extra celebrate. Jesus, set us free from the laws of the old testament, so one can enjoy all the trimmings of Christmas. Some Christians don't tell their kids about Santa. I did because I was raised in a home that did not practise Christianity, I became one later in life. So it is hard to change old habits. Still we can have fun too. I think most folks think Christmas is too commerical.

The church encourages the celebration of Christmas bacause some will hear the name of Jesus as the reason for the celebration and other in the Chritmas songs that are being sung all around or even when the term 'Christmas' is used. So it is good the Name of Jesus is lifte up in some way or other. Christians as parents should give presents to their children as coming from themselves in celebration of the birthday of Jesus notwithstanding that it may not be on 25 December. I suppose any day is good day to celebrate His birthday. For this is the day the Lord has made and we shall rejoice and be glad in it!

Christmas is totally commercialized to much. when the merchants start putting Christmas items out before Halloween and almost totally ignoring Thanksgiving then to much emphasis is placed on the greed of commercialism. even if Christians " borrowed " several traditions to convert people from Paganism.

I know its insane isn't it...to think that someone in church would teach something that has no evidence, no proof, and only to go on the stories that were passed down from generation to generation. Its Insane to think that this would happen in a church...a church of all places. And to think that people can actually at one point of their lives get some happiness out of thinking that he exists when in fact he doesn't and never did. Crazy isn't it.

Actually, they do. We encourage exchanging gifts between loved ones, and giving beyond our normal charity as a celebration of Jesus birth, but it is the rare church indeed that has a picture of Santa anywhere on its grounds.
