but they refuse to believe in God! It's almost like they look for things that can't possibly be true and use that 'evidence' against believing.

How does that work??

Pride, foolish pride.

Because the natural man, in his heart, hates God.

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God, for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Romans 8/7. Notice not just hostile but enmity.

The mind is employed by the heart against God.

That is why we are told, For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness..... Rom 10/10

Further, men inherit fury against God from their master Satan, the god of this world, which blinds them to be utterly foolish. Being proud they give themselves over to Satan's devices thinking they are being clever, but Satan is the god of this world and deceives the whole world. The whole world lies in his power. They are no match for Satan who is much greater than mere man in power and might.

(Look at the foolish charicatures they make of Satan not knowing that he can transform himself into an angel of light to deceive them. Their pride makes them easy meat.)

Man despises to be governed and is presumptuous and self willed ,and is not afraid to speak evil of dignities. He becomes like a brute beast, made to be taken and destroyed, and speaks evil of things he does not understand.

What a desperate state and staggering ignorance. How piteous.

Men love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil, and every one that does evil hates the light neither comes to the light lest his deeds should be reproved. (John 3)

Man is so self righteous, so full of himself, he goes about to establish his own righteousness and does not submit to God's righteousness.(Romans 10)

Man always wants to justify himself. So that he can do what he wants to do. He is so utterly foolish.

History records this.

What is the remedy?

Only by the word of God's truth can man be undeceived. Only through humlity and the power of God can that word of truth become effective to deliver. Humility is alien to Satan's nature and man's pride but is a hallmark of God.

The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Psalm 34/18

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart O God thou wilt not despise. Psalm 51/17

For thus says the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy, I dwell in the high and holy place with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the sprit of the humble and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. Isaiah 57/15

For all these things hath my hand made and all those things have been, saith the Lord, but to this man will I look , even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit and trembleth at my word. Isaiah 66/2

That's the thing - I do know a lot about the bible. I know it is an eclectic, discontinuous collection of highly selected, badly edited, poorly translated myths and legends. I know that it is chock full of contradictions, lies and absurdities. I know that it contains some absolutely abhorrent ideas and moral precepts.
You do not have to look very hard at all to find many, many things that can not possibly be true! From page one it is just very, very silly. Let me tip your question around, given the bible is full or error, violence, amorallity and stupidity, what possible evidence can you glean from it to justify beleif??

Mark Twain said it for me - 'Some theologist have problems with the parts of the bible they do not understand. I worry about the parts I do understand!'

I've seen very few who don't believe in God who actually have read and studied the entire Bible. If they did, they'd have a better view of the "discrepancies" they cite when they see one passage then yell "AHA!" as if they've proven their point. The Bible taken as a whole DOES make sense, and alot of it makes sense in a scientific way if you take the same amount of time understanding as someone does with all the sciences they say prove it wrong. And remember this also, alot of people refuse to believe in God because it doesn't fit their lifestyle. They are kind of "hoping" it isn't true.

By the way, the same people who say the Bible is full of fantasy can read other books full of metaphor and call it genius.

The bible tries to enforce a belief that god exists. It is a collection of books by people who actually believed in God's existance. Anybody can read literature and have knowledge of that subject but then they can form objective opinions based on the knowledge gained

CJUNK has put it so well. To know the bible is to know the static but ambiguous nonsense of an inferior god - inferior because he is created by man. If there is a god (I don't happen to believe there is) one would hope he is somewhat more sophisitcated than Bronze and Iron age man could come up with.

That is a good point. Why do they spend so much time trying to prove the Bible wrong, if they don't believe it? I'm sure it is fun for some to take something out of context and then try to use it to trap us. But this should make Christians stronger in our faith walk.

People who reject God Think they Know So much about the bible but they lack the spirit of God to comprehend it therefore they set themselves up to be blinded and given over to a reprobate mind. They are without excuse and their evidence is unfounded for their lack of beliefs.

If you want to know why you think the way you do, you have to look at the alternatives. I read the Bible when I was younger just to know where it stood. Reading it left me know how absurd it was.

It is pretty easy to look things up to use in these kinds of forums so we might not know it as well as you think. There are a lot of atheist online resources. If you want to find something quick, I just go here: http://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/
Everything searchable and notes that I generally agree with.

When it comes to what to believe, ruling out "things that can't possibly be true" is a pretty good start. I fail to see the problem.

you are right. don't forget even the devil can quote scripture to his own advantage.

remember non-believers who use the bible against itself are usually taking the verses ignorantly out of context. if a two thousand year old religion could not adequetly explain the apparent 'discrepancies' then the two thousand year old religion would have been short lived. be warned when people quote scripture in one verse parallels with another one's discrepancy, they will have taken it out of context to exploit expressions and verses that were irrelevant, but explainable, to the original message. they will misinterpret it purposefully to try to spin the message of the word worse than a LA times journalist.
