Because we depend on them. They give us the power to communicate to the world around us. They inspire, empower, motivate, arouse, scare, intimidate, anger. They are misused, abused, underutilized, misunderstood, and mangled. We change the meanings and uses of them with every generation.
They are a way to express our individuality and our beliefs. They are the way we express the best we are and the worst we can become... from love to war. You can scar a child from the inside out with the use of words...or give him the gift of knowledge...

We use words to entertain, explain, define, and move the masses. Awesome isn't it.

Honestly, most people don't have a thick skin anymore and can't handle something that they don't like. Even if it is the spoken word. As a result, the lawsuit is the adult way of being a tattle tale. It's a dirty shame, but it's true.
