Srinivasa Iyengar's translation of Valmiki Ramayana mentions that Rama had other wives than Sita. Is this correct? Then what is the popular view that Rama was wedded to only one and this was his greatest penance?

I've heard many re-tellings of the story and there was never a mention of any other wives for Rama. In fact, during one part of the story there were beautiful apsaras who fall in love with Rama and he tells them that they are very beautiful, but he can only be with Sita, never anyone else.
