My friend is a Buddhist monk. According to him, causing suffering of any kind is against Buddhist teaching. Also eating meat is unnecessary and the only reason we do so it to fulfill our desires. Desire is the primary thing Buddhists are trying to rid themselves of. And of course, you may be reincarnated as an animal, so unless you want somebody eating you, you shouldn't eat animals.

He SAYS this, but when he comes to our house in his luxury car, he eats meat, drinks to excess, and tells the dirtiest jokes ever. The monks he brings with him are not much better. And after seeing the monks here in Japan, I have realized that he is not an exception to the rule, but very much the standard. And people wonder why I have a distrust of organized religion.

Sorry for ranting. And I have no idea about the starfruit. News to me there.

I can understand the beef because they can't eat the flesh of an animal. According to Buddhist ethics, it's immoral to eat the flesh of another creature since people and animals can be reincarnated as one another. I've never heard of the prohibition on Starfruit though. As far as I can tell they should have no problems with fruit.

I will ring your doorbell and run away!!!

I haven't heard about starfruit but beef or any animal product is prohibited if one practices Buddhism. One of the principles of Buddhism is non-violence. Animal slaughter ( buying meat is indirect slaughter ) is considered violent. Causing unnecessary pain to other living things is violent and sinful therefore one cannot attain the goal of liberation.

Liberation spiritually speaking is bliss, peace, happiness, satisfaction.

Other schools refer liberation as devotion for the Supreme Being.
