It is not how LONG you brush your teeth, but what technique you use when you brush. So many people go all their lives just "brushing" their teeth without really knowing that there is some skill and technique to it. FIrst start off by using a soft tooth brush (not medium or hard!) and toothpaste that has an agrigate in it (paste instead of gel). Colgate Total is a greeat one to use because it has added ingrediants that help prevent plaque from sticking to your teeth for 12 hours after brushing (even if you eat and drink).
Place your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle to the tooth surface and brush where the bristles go under the gumline. Brush in small circles (like waxing a car) instead of side to side. Brush each tooth seperatly. DO not try to brush several teeth all at once. The angle must change from tooth to tooth. Make sure to brush all sides of the tooth, fron back and top.
Then, you must floss. FLossing cleans the interproximal (in between the teeth) and the root surface. Most people flass wrong too. Don't push the floss straight down, it will cut the gum between your teeth. Instead once you get it between the teeth, bend it around one tooth (like you were going to tie a rope around a tree), and see saw it up and down below the gum line. It may bleed at first, but when they get healthy after several weeks of proper cleaning, it should not bleed or hurt anymore.
You should floss at least once a day, and brush at least three times a day, espically after eating. Cavities form because sugar substances are left in the mouth for a long period of time allowing the bacteria to eat the sugar. If you brush immedatly after eating or drinking anything - then the chance of you getting cavities will be almost none.
Good luck and happy brushing!

Well they say you should spend two minutes brushing them morning and night! I probably spend about almost 5 minutes brushing mine! If you have bad teeth i suggest you go along to a dentist and get a clean an polish - your mout th feels wonderful afterwards!! Also they can fix any damage such as cavities! If you don't get the damage fixed it will worsen overtime even if you do end up brushing your teeth on a regular basis!!
Yes you really do need to stop being lazy - just think about how you would feel if your teeth fell out and you were left with no teeth? That is what motivates me to brush my teeth when I am feeling like I can't be bothered!!

you really need to minimize the amount of time you spend brushing your teeth because brushing back and forth for too long can wear off your enamel which is hazardous because your enamel is the hard coated layer of your teeth. I'm sure the water you use to rinse your mouth out already has flourine in it so there's no need to brush for that long. I would say brush your teeth no longer than 3 minutes and no less than a minute. I hope this helps you.

2 times a day once in the night once in the morning...and you do it for 2 minutes each time...have you got an electric toothbrush? they are much better than a normal toothbrush...they get right down the sides of your teeth where you might not be able to reach with a normal brush.
Also you don't have to really move your hand the brush does it all for you ha ha
