Yes, I know several couples in which one partner is blind. I used to work at a community center that served the recreation & educational needs of people with vision impairments. I also became friends with one couple in which both people were blind.

All of the couples I know are very happy. People who are blind can do just about anything that people who can see are capable of doing. You will have the added responsibility of doing all of the driving for the family (but if you live near a bus line, your spouse would be very capable of getting himself to work, dr's appt's, etc). You may also be responsible for most of the mail and bill paying in the houshold...but with the ability to pay bills on-line your spouse, who is blind, could help with that too.

People who are blind can cook, clean, have careers, raise children, go to school, do laundry, and do just about anything sighted people can do. They have just as many good and bad qualities as people who can see.

You obviously know this guy pretty well to call him your boyfriend. You know what he likes to do, what he doesn't like to do, you know his personality quirks, (and I'm sure he knows yours.) Do not let his lack of sight prevent you from moving forward with your relationship. You will not be inherriting a burden. If anything, you may have a few challenges (but who doesn't.) If this guy is a good, honest, and loving person, give him a chance. You won't regret it.

If you still have your doubts, talk to your boyfriend about them. Chances are, he is worried about some of the same things you are. He can also help calm your fears about what it might be like to live with him (better yet, talk to his parents...they've already lived with him.) If you still need more suggestions, search for websites from associations that offer services for the blind. E-mail your questions to the association, and maybe they can put you in touch with someone who has been in a similar situation.

Good luck to you. May you live a long and happy life together!
