What is the mechanism that make people (mostly girls) fall into becoming anorexic?
Do you have some experience about it (direct or a friend of yours)?

Please state where you come from and what is your opinion.

I used to be anorexic. It was caused in my case from having to deal with abuse for so long I just couldn't take it anymore. Anorexia can also be a cry for attention but a lot of the cases are like mine they were abused and blamed them selves and strive to be perfect and accepted by everyone. Yes, anorexia can be cured but in most cases it haunts for the rest of your life and most turn back to it. You usually have to be hospitalized to recover but the anorexic has to really want it otherwise it's useless.

I hope that helped if you want more info about what the daily life of an anorexic is like I'd suggest visiting a pro-ana site because they have actually experienced anorexia instead of the professionals that just tell you how to cure it.

It often has very little to do with self esteem. Many people are unaware that some anorexic tendencies begin in very early childhood. For me it was 3 years of age. You can be genetically predisposed as well. It can also be related to a chemical imbalance in the brain. More and more men are being diagnosed as well. It has actually been around for generations only before it often went without the anorexic label. 2-3 generations ago they may have been described as being frail, etc.

I actually battled with it when I was 13.........
what made me start was because of all the skinny girls they have on the front of magazines and i thought to myself is this really what the world wants girls to look like???? It must be if that's what eveyone and everywhere is advertising.
I thought of it like the music scene people only put out there what they think the public wants to hear and people only display girls the way the public likes them too.......
I had a very low self esteem and thought i was constantly fat, I even turned to i.v drugs to help me shed weight I got down to a measley 28kg before I realised this was not a healthy choice in my life........
Also my family loved and supported me all the way through it and i could not have done it without them...
Today i am very happy and healthy and am ashamed i fell into that catagory of the beautiful people!!!!!!! they're not they're skeletons of who they really are.....
so basically it is the image that is bestowed apon us from young girls that makes us so self concious about the way we look but hey you know what we were all made to be unique and beautiful, sadly some do not recover and see that there is light at the end of the tunnel, but others like me go on to live a happy healthy and productive life, glad to have overcome such a huge battle and happy just to be alive.......
All the besty sweetie...

ibanez is probably right on: It's a psychological equation of the mind if you can call it that. I suppose peer pressure, group pressure. A combination of these. They see the models, Paris Hilton, people like this. They of course want to be like them so they can be, not so much famous as "liked"

The mechanism if that's what the word is, is in the brain and I'm sure, like other mental problems, can be adjusted or repaired, fixed or at least consoled with therapy. It has to be recognized first, then treated.

I think the main factor is self esteem or lack of it.
