If your cat goes more than 2 days without eating, you need to take him to the vet. There are any number of things that could be wrong, including that he is just upset about something [change of food, moved the litter box, you were gone on vacation... ] Cats can develop a condition called "fatty liver syndrome". Basically what happens is when they quit eating, the body starts breaking down the liver. After they go for too long without food, they become nauseated and are actually unable to eat because it makes them sick to their stomach. I have had two cats over the years that developed this, and one died from it.

Lots of good answers here!
Of course, the question may not necessarily be why is he not eating, but what else is abnormal?
Not eating is usually a sign of something else. Is he urinating frequently, more than normal, or less than normal? How regular are his stools and are they normal? Is he coughing, sneezing, or appear to be breathing a bit heavier? Does he cringe or meow when you pick him up or massage his belly?
Yes, it is possible for cats to stress themselves to the point where they lose their appetite without any other underlying diseases and this in itself can exacerbate the problem. Oftentimes, enticing them with bit of yummy juicy canned tuna can pull them out of thier slump. Also, if the water bowl went empty, dehydration can lead to inappetance, so giving moist food will also give them water. However, if any of the above clinical signs exist or he still won't eat, it's time to take him in for diagnostic tests and treatment. Even if all of the diagnostic tests come back clean, he would probably still benefit from being treated for dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities and potentially appetite stimulants.

You dont have to go running of to the vet right away like these people said, its a waste of time, money and unnessery torment for the cat.
Wait a 1 or 2 days and moniter him. He may have a upset stomach, he could be getting food from else where, he may not like the food!
Animals can feel ill aswell as humans and arnt always up for eating.
after a few days if he hasnt eaten a thing! then it would be a good idea to get him checked out.

the endless amount of possibilities here is astounding. But before you go running to the vet, instead keep a keen eye on what your cat is doing. Let me explain. My cat..TOM, began to do the very same thing. his usual routine was to eat vigorously twice a day, and then keep an interest in what i was eating as a hobby of his. :) then, suddenly, he quit eating entirely. I couldn't get him to eat, drink, showed no interest, instead put a frown on his face, and withdrew from all activities. I grew concerned for his happiness, and after 3 days, decided enuf was enough and took him to the local vet. There, after i explained his problem, they ran test after test. xrays, examined his body all over. checking mouth, eyes, everything. and after an afternoon of a very long list of activities, and a vet bill of 600 dollars!. they called me and telled me to pick him up. I went in, where they sheepishly explained to me that TOM, had in fact.. a stomach ache.
I was so shocked! and how silly i was. they gave me the equivalent of a cat tums, and that afternoon TOM again began to chow happily.

he probably ventured into my backyard and sampled some of my new bait. wet cat food mixed with antifreeze, rat poison, and mothballs! I expect cats to be on the endangered species list in my neighborhood before the year is out.
Here is another method I have tried to curb the local feline population. Please don't bother calling the authorities about this, as the neighbors already have and what im doing is legal since i have posted warning signs on my property. here is a link to the short video tutorial.

you need to take him to the vet. if a cat goes 3 days with out eating it can start to devlop fatty liver disease. One of my cats lost his appetite once and I called the vet and he had a fecal impaction. didn't need surgery but a $150 dollar xray and an enema. the longer you wait, the more expencive it will get. it could be as simple as he has a cold and can't smell his food to get to it.
