Since my neighbours moved out, no-one has moved in yet, though the house has been bought. I heard movement in there about 2 weeks ago but nothing since and now there is a weird smell coming from the house. HELP!!

i know that if it's a corpse i should contact the authorities, but i don't want to be calling the police if it's just that they didn't take the bin out and it's the leftover food that's gone bad. Can't someone explain the smell to me?

I lived with a man (or rather he lived with me) for over twelve years, and he died of cancer in my home. It is kind of a long explaination which I won't go into now, but I didn't know he was dead for almost a week. The door to the room he was in, reamined closed, and I didn't really notice the odor. I guess I kind of got used to it, because it gradually increased over time. But, the police could tell the second they walk in the front door. And it was a great deal more noticeable, even to me, once that bedroom door was open. And of course, strongest odor was in the room itself, and it took a long time to get rid of it. I really can't describe the odor, because I can't recall ever having smelled anything like it before, but it is a sickening odor, and the stronger it gets the more sickening it gets. If you have any real reason at all to suspect that something may be wrong, I would definately call the police.

An excellent question. I think Grandma is going to be in big trouble. From I red about Cadaver dogs: Cadaver dogs are trained to ignore live human scent and animal scent, and only indicate on human remains. These dogs can be used to find human remains related to crime scenes, old missing persons cases and small scent sources." So , in short, a Cadaver dog call tell the difference without a doubt. I think you'll find the link below very interesting.

1) Cadavers smell like the FORMALDEHYDE they are preserved with. It is a chemically smell.

2) When people move out, sometimes small animals like rats or possums get stuck inside of or under the house and die. This would smell really bad, and would also explain the movements you heard and the bad odor you smell.

The thing to do would be to call the leasing agent or the real estate agent and have them either investigate or call the police. They will most likely take care of it immediately, because the real property will lose it's potential profit if it picks up a bad smell they can't get rid of. If they don't come right away, (same day), then you must call the police.

Call the police. Call the health department. It could be human remains, but would 't be considered a cadaver. A cadaver is embalmed or preserved in a way for medical research. I think you are worried there is a dead body, human remains, or a corpse. But not a cadaver, unless you have a medical school or scientific labortatory next door.
