The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ.

Matthew 16:17-19 states:

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.

The Catholic Church has referred to itself as the “Catholic Church” at least since 107 AD, when the term appears in the Letter of St. Ignatius of Antioch to the Smyrnaeans:

Wherever the bishop appear, there let the multitude be; even as wherever Christ Jesus is, there is the Catholic Church.

All of this was long before the Council of Nicea and the Nicene Creed from 325 A.D. which states, "We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church."

With love in Christ.

The Catholic Church is the only Christian church that can clearly demonstrate a continuous history back to the First Century and the Apostles. It is the one Church founded by Jesus Christ for all mankind. Jesus never founded or authorized the founding of any other churches in His name. On the contrary, He clearly said that all His followers were to be ONE in faith, ONE in worship.

The Catholic Church was created by order of the pagan Roman Emperor Consatine who wanted all the different Christian Churches to get together and work out a common theology. That was the First Council of Nicene. After hammering out a common dogma they referred to themselves as the Universal or Catholic Church. Consatine then ordered that they create a common set of scriptures and they hashed out which books should be in the Christian Bible and which ones should be dropped. Seeds of discontent were planted in the Church at that time which resulted in the schisms that came later. The Emperor was also the head of the Roman pagan religion and had the title Pontificus Maximus. On the death of the emepror the bishop of Rome took the title for himself becoming the Pontif or pope and used political manipulation to gain supremacy over the other bishops.

Essentially Peter, with strong assistance from Paul and some assistance from John and maybe James. But it was organized and systematized under the direction of Pagan Emperor Constantine in 300 AD from a scattered collection of churches into a solidarity, a singlarity.

Protestantism was the opposite. It broke up the singularity back into a scattered collection of disassociated churches.

I must agree with Chris. As many Catholics here have been quick to point out, the Catholics believe that when Jesus told Peter "upon this rock will I build my church" He was speaking to Peter as Peter being the first pope. Just a couple of things to point out here:

Peter's name means pebble. Great cornerstone, huh?

Peter was married. The Bible talks about Jesus healing Peter's mother-in-law. Popes don't marry!

Later in the New Testament it says that Christ is the chief cornerstone of the church. With this information, we can look back on the verses in Matthew where the Catholics claim Jesus appointed Peter the first pope and see that when Jesus said "upon this rock (not a pebble, but a boulder) will I build my church" He was obviously talking about himself.

Since Christ was dead before the Catholic church was started, we will look at the truth. It was founded by Shakespere. It was a means to find placement for the sinners in the Christian society. They dealt with the Catholic cult the same way as they did with the bad people of the day.

With love in Christ.

the Catholic church was founded on Peter `The Rock` as Jesus gave Him the `Keys`,it was the Apostle Paul who helped bring the church to a wide group of peoples because of his travels, but all the Apostles preached the good news of the Gospel.

They're not going to tell you because people might worship them. The Catholic Church didn't get it's start the day after Jesus died. It took a while for the concept to come to fruition. Jesus never mentioned anything about starting a religion.
