A pre-school playgroup, in everyday usage just a playgroup, is an organised group providing care and socialisation for children under five. The term is widely used in the United Kingdom. Playgroups are less formal than nursery schools and do not provide full time care, operating for only a few hours a day during school term time, often in the mornings only. They are staffed by nursery nurses or volunteers, not by nursery teachers, and are run by private individuals or charities, rather than by the state or companies.

In the USA it is an informal get together of Moms and kids of similar ages and interests who are close enough to meet at a regular time for the kids to get together to play safely. The Mom's usually just watch the kids and either help organize play or play with them, or just sit and have tea and talk. There are no processes, registrations, background checks, rules, etc. because the Moms are there with the kids.

If this question is being asked from the UK, you will need to register with your local authority. These days, workers will need to be vetted like all who come into contact with children. Speak to your Town Hall - they will be able to put you through to someone who can help you more.
