There is a reciprical agreement whereby a Brit could get emergency medical treatment in OZ and vice versa if required. If you're backpacking around Oz, get a Medicare card and carry it around. If you're just there short term, carry something that identifies you as British.

You will have to pay for all other medical treatment (including treatment once you are out of the medical emergency) so get travel insurance.
