NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a remnant of the Cold War. It was originally devised as a coalition to protect the Allied countries on the western side of the Iron Curtain from the superior numbers, militarily speaking, of the Russian and Eastern block communist countries. Although the US had troops in Germany the NATO forces would serve as a speed bump until the U.S. forces could arrive in larger numbers from the states to confront the Reds in the ultimate showdown. I don't know what they do now. I believe NATO now has members that used to be on the Russian side. The Reds also had a cozy military relationship with the Baathists in Iraq back in the 60's and 70's if I remember right. They were big Syrian supporters as well...the Reds are still up to their old tricks, except now they kill their own spies/people......It's ridiculous for Bush to expect any help any time soon on Iran from those guys...

Mutual defence originally. Article 5 states that any nation attacked is considered as an attack against all nations. In the end France showed what NATO was for when they backed Saddam.

Now NATO is just an excuse to keep one division of troops in germany so that the Germans can get by without hiring their own soldiers. Americans paying to protect Europeans who hate them

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, is called NATO.

Function at the start: Maintain peace and order.

Provide security for the nations belonging to the organisation, from any threats from USSR or any other country.

Find its charter on Internet and read the details of the treaty. Since the formation, lots of other countries have joined it, including satellite countries of USSR block countries and some countries belonging to the block itself.
