Human reasoning has evolved to a level that these days in the western countries people no longer believe that one is born with a faith. Faith is something one develops as he grows. With advance in the field of science and technology not many questions remain unanswered and people no longer look at the priest for the answer, as it used to happen in the medieval period.
Secondly the Church has become corrupt and divided, as a result they depend more on denominational aspect of the religion and have become more and more publicity oriented.
The elite is fed of with the services and the rituals bereft of any cogent justification.
So they prefer to claim that they do not belong to any religious sect as such.

Because you can't be "born" a Christian. It requires faith, which an infant doesn't have. When we grow up we all have the choice of deciding for ourselves whether we will put faith in the religions of our parents or choose something different. These days most people don't necessarily believe in God because of the atrocities that are going on in the world and many don't follow organized religion because of the hypocrisy they see.

Do you mean born-again Christians? If so then maybe when they become born-again they realize all the years they spent living an empty life. The shock of how good their life is now that they have found Christ has them all flustered. But really they should realize they now have a Christian religion.
Your question is kind of confusing.

I am a born again Christian who states that I have no religion
I just looked up the definition (websters dictionary) ... It is not only a state recognised and supported... (however it is not supported here.)
The feeling of reverence, wheich men entertain toward a supreme being; the regcognition of God as an object of worship, love and obedience; peity; any system of Faith and worship...
Because God is not an Object - I know Him, I have a personal relationship, He is my ultimate father (I get along well with my Biological Dad). I don't feel dutiful, This is my life, I do this because I know God, and through knowing Him, I love Him, through all this I understand that His wisdom surpasses mine so I follow His advice (also known as laws)...
I don't turn it on and turn it off... I don't entertain a feeling of reverence - I am reverent - I ooze it. It is not affected by my feelings.

Because there is a difference from being "religious" and following all the tiruals in church, and saying amen when your told, and doin this that and the other, and from being a follower of Christ. Two completely different things

i believe it is because there are so many demoninations in the Christian religion, all claiming to be the "true" church that many prefer not to belong to any of them. your religion will not save you-- and in my opinion organized religion really has failed - because they cannot themselves understand the simplicity of God and Christ..just an opinion

Perhaps by "religion" they may also mean that they have NO SPECIAL ATTACHMENTS to any particular "church" or any duly registered, non-profit religious organization... yet consider themselves to be Christians, maybe??
Peace be with you.

you can only claim what you practice. If you were born Christian and dont practice it, it wouldnt be fair to call yourself one.
