The biggest difference is that 50 years ago pupils had respect for the people who were teaching them, and those in authority, which helped to turn them into far better people than a great deal of those being spewed out of the education system nowadays....they could also read, write and spell correctly, and also do mental arithmetic.... no cheating with a calculator or mobile phone in those days!
I might add that as odd as it may seem to youngsters today, those being educated 50 years ago were enormously grateful for the education they were receiving.

All the kids at school now are 50 years younger than we are now..
Seriously, with no disciplie and no respect for anyone, the average kid today comes out of school a much lesser person than we did all those years ago. They might be able to text quickly and play complicated games on their computers but they totally lack the basic skills that were drummed into us in the "old days". A friend of mine has been a teacher at the same school for 30 years and he says that the kids of today, in the main, could not care less about anything other than what they are going to do that evening , how much booze they are going to have and which bird they are going to pull. I for one wish that the old days at school could be re-born so that this country could again be called Great...at the moment it just GRATES.

No computers in classrooms 50 years ago. We were lucky to get slide shows and movies once in a while.
Also no television. Just teacher, the blackboard and books.
I think we might possibly have learned more then. By the way, I was a sophomore in high school 50 years ago.

One big thing apart from technology in classrooms is that the pupils parents used to support the schools' decisions on their kids behaviour. For instance if you had a detention, the cane, slipper or rap on the knuckles parents would say...'well you must have deserved it!' That's if you had the guts to tell your Mum and Dad because chances are they would give you some punishment too. So on the whole there was much more unity and belief in attitudes and what was expected. I despair at parents who think their children can do no wrong and are too protective nowadays.

Well....for one thing ,50 years ago we could all write and spell properly when we left school. There was more respect for the teachers, police , parents etc. We were brought up to work hard for everything and not expect it NOW.
Oh! , I could go on but I'm tired and old and getting bored with this GIMME world.

I was more scared of the teachers than of the few trainee psychos, who diverted their violence outside the school perimiters...and there they were afraid of the police...
Now the inmates have taken over the asylum...
However, my comprehensive recently had its 50th anniversary, and I can honestly say that the teachers attracted to this new experiment were on the whole (though one or 2 sadists) dedicated to improving the lot of post-war kids and talented..
The social mix in our school was unbelievable.
Add to this government's desire to give poor people a chance to go to university..and they were special times..
Pity the trend lately (when was it never?) has been to create a pool of cheap labour, despite the future requiring skilled workers...then who will clean houses...serve coffees...The late (70s and 80s especially were a time of deliberate govt educational dumbing-down.
Fortunately, the Polish immigrants are already unionising to fight this exploitation)

50 years ago you were taught to read, and write grammatically, and spell words correctly, also the difference between right and wrong, also respect for your elders and authority.Today, you are not,we turn out many morons, with no respect,no command of the language, many already dependent on drugs, walking around in a daze, and probably on benifit with at least one kid,God bring back proper education ,and the cane to go with it.

There is more technology today. The curriculum is more advanced. More options on classes. More options for teachers as far as things to do instead of talking... they have movies, powerpoint and other such aides to help them teach.

No longer a 2 tier education system, and you leave school at an older age.
