Why is it up to a sex offender to register themselves as sex offenders and not already be registered as soon as they get convicted. Thats why so many slip the system and are repeat offenders

The problem is you can physically move anywhere in the world you want to, and unless you have a warrant, you're free. So the compromise the govt came up with was that once you were free, you already served your time for your offence, was to make you register as an offender. I know it's lame and it all comes down to computer technology!!!
The government loves to save money, and any shortcut they can put on the population will be tolerated until someone makes a gigantic fuss - fueling the popular vote.for a different outcome.

It's not like registering to vote or entering a contest. To register means they keep the police informed every three month which house they live in. They must tell their address so neighbors can know who are the sex offenders in the community. If you live in a community with a state prision, you have even more sex offenders living in your area that you would normally, by statistics per capita. Those offenders in jail are listed as incarcerated in you county. Sex offenders carry cards that look like drivers licences because they are photographed at the highway partol office.

There's nothing wrong with the system. Not many people just up and forget that they are a sex offender. Since you are released from prison, have the right to live where you want, it's up to you to tell the local authorities you are there. There's no more accurate tracking system than letting people know where you are!

Not registering doesn't cause recidivism just as registering doesn't stop recidivism.

'Cause once upon a time some lawyer and doctor decided to make a ton of money by saying these people could be rehabilitated and so all this was set in place and the world was a happy place-till it was proven out to be the biggest scam the world has ever seen. Now it has to be changed but we all know how long that takes, and we know they have rights, God forbid we infringe.

Because when they get convicted their address is the state prison at least for awhile. The government knows where they are. It is after they are released that the government is trying to keep up with them. What do you want them to do? Tail every released sexual offender??

I think the self-registry is more for when they relocate. Since the government can't (yet) implant monitoring chips in them, they are legally required to notify authorities when they move into a new area, so the authorities can make their dwelling public, which obviously still doesn't solve the problem, as we've seen.

it goes to show how many of these "types" are floating about in society, authorities ie:police have restricted manpower levels and are assigned only to the future crimes taking place, and not crimes that are partially served in gaol and the rest under a probation order, past crimes.
