That whole thing never quite made sense to me either. I know that "bible people" have a whole explanation for how it all worked, but even as a small child I used to think, "Well, you shouldn't have done that for me, thanks."

Because that was the price. If it doesn't make sense to you, that's okay. It makes sense to God.
Why wouldn't God just save you then and there? Because he gives you a choice. Why does he give you a choice? Because forced love isn't love.
His father let him suffer because the price had to be paid, and Jesus was willing to pay it.

Christ did not pay for our sins on the cross. He paid for our sins with every drop of blood that He sweat while praying in the Garden of Gethsemane. Each drop of blood represented a sin that would be committed. The cross was the modern means of execution of His time. He died so He could rise again to give one more "proof" that he was the Son of God.

How would someone suffering save everybody else from doom and gloom? He could not wave a magic wand. He is said to have had compassion for those who cruzified him and he asked god to forgive them for their sins. The answer is his compassion for faulty humans, not saving us if we believe he is still alive or if we chant his name 500 times a day.

The issue in Eden was about God's right to rule mankind. Adam and Eve, who were perfect, lost their perfect standing before God. In doing so, they lost the ability to reproduce perfect offspring, so each of us has inherited sin and death. God's perfect justice requires balance...thus a perfect human life had to be givin as a ransom to take the place of the perfect human life Adam lost. Since no one is perfect, God made provisions to send his son, Jesus, to earth as a perfect human. Jesus, through his life course, proved himself faithful to God even to death, so he paid the ransom to buy the rest of us out of sin and death and proved that a perfect human could and would remain faithful to God no matter what was put before him. God is now giving us ample time to try every form of government so that it will have been proved for all time that man cannot rule himself successfully. He's also giving us time to search for him and get to know him and what he requires of us if we want to live under his rulership. He has set a time in which he will, as the Bible puts it, set up his kingdom which will crush and put an end to all other kingdoms and governments on the earth. This kingdom will bring about paradise conditions on the earth and it will remove all those who aren't willing to live peacefully in harmony with his will. We will have the prospect of living forever upon the earth (remember, the meek shall inherit the earth?) and those who have died have the prospect of being resurrected. Christ will rule as king of God's kingdom for 1000 years will bring mankind back to perfection and then Satan will be released from the abyss for a short period of time as a final test to perfected humans. Those who choose to follow a course of rebellion with Satan will be done away with forever and those who remain faithful will have everlasting life. Satan and his demons will also be done away with. After that, the issue of sovereignty will be settled for all time.
If God had just saved us, it wouldn't have settled the issue at hand. Additionally, it wasn't just humans that were involved...the angels had witnessed everything that happened. God could have just done away with Adam and Eve (which he would have to do because he said the penalty for their disobedience was death) which would have proved his power, but wouldn't have proved that we aren't capable of successfully ruling ourselves.
Jesus was a willing volunteer in the outworking of God's will in this regard. Just as Isaac willing submitted to his father, Abraham, when God asked that he be sacrificed. Isaac was 25 years old at the time and Abraham was 125. Certainly Isaac could have said no and he could have even overpowered his father. But both had faith that God could bring him back to life. Jesus likewise knew that God wouldn't leave him dead, but would resurrect him to the heavenly life he had before he came to earth.
