You get what you pay for. Nikon is a very good camera.

Nikon is supposed to manufacture a one-of-a-kind lens. I've heard of cameras by other brands that use the Nikon lens. I think it's all in the lens. Plus, although some Japanese products are made in China to cut costs, Nikon probably has 'em made in Japan, which drives up the price quite a bit, but is supposed to be a mark of quality as well.

Good quality camera and a steller reputation. And it's not because they are manufactured only in Japan. My Nikon D200 and some of my lenses were made in Thailand. They also have manufacturing facilities in other parts of Asia.

how much you pay is how much (quality of the photos) you get. But don't forget a lot is about photographer skills (this leads to library and photo books). ;-)
