have all sex offenders raped and killed three year old girls. if not, then why does not our legal system note this on the sex offenders registery . I know the media has wipped the public into a frenzy and into a state of fear regarding sex offenders and that there are 500,000 registered offenders ,but we must keep in mind that it has taken 60 years to compiled this number out of a population of 300,000,000. I am not that concerm for my own children.

I'd be concerned about my children. 500,000 and thats just the convicted ones. How many get away with it? 500,000 means 10,000 in every state, 10,000 in your state. Plus the ones that are still unconvicted. How many in your county if you do the division. Then don't forget they repeat their crime. How many incidents is that? Does it worry you yet? It does Me. Too close to home, My children and grandchildren need to be protected from these criminals.

The website in California usually states the crime that the person has been convicted of. Of course, if you aren't familiar with the legal system and sex crimes in particular you might not understand what the crimes actually are. However, people convicted of certain misdemenors have to register (for the rest of their lives) and the law does not take into consideration that some sex offenders rape and killed three year old girls and others were just convicted of misdomeanor indecent exposure. As such, the registry is full of people who probably shouldn't be on it (for the rest of their lives). But politicians can't be seen to care about "sex offenders" no matter why they are. Politicians have to be tough on crime or lose to someone who is tougher. In a recent election, a DA in a small county had as his campaign slogan "When tough isn't enough". What? Should we be so tough that we convict people who didn't do it or punish people to such an extent that it doesn't remotely fit the crime?

This is a terrible political issue, but I fear that we are going in the wrong direction and aren't likely to change course any time soon. Just look at the recent California proposition which requires that all sex offenders cannot live within 2000 feet of a school or park. Sex offenders will be unable to live in certain urban areas. There was already a law on the books regarding violent sex offenders, so the new law only affects the non-violent ones. Voters approved it by a huge margin. What politician is going to stand up for sex offenders? It won't happen, ever.

You should be concerned. It happens more than you think. Just talk to someone that it has happened to like me. I spent 20 some years with it bottled up inside me. When I finally begin speaking of it, I found out that majority of women around me had been thru some sort of sexual abuse as a child or as a grown woman. It surprised me greatly to know that so many were out there & all the ones that I learned of thru friends & co-workers never reported their abuse. Plus, like me, majority of them were sexually abused by a close relative, friend, or spouse. They don't note how a sex offender committed their crime because it doesn't matter HOW they committed their crime...it only matters THAT they committed it. Plus, you need to realise that it takes a lot of evidence to actually charge someone of a sexual offense. These aren't innocent people that were in the wrong place at the wrong time. I understand you wanting to believe that you shouldn't HAVE to worry about your children, but take it from me...always always keep it in the back of your mind & protect those innocent children from a sexual offense because it haunts you for all of your life even thru therapy & years of working it out in your head. I'm not a police official but I hope this helps you with your question.

I don't know what state you live in but in Texas it shows the charge. Everyone needs to worry most cases are not even reported. There are a lot more than you even know about and it usually is a friend or family member.

This may not answer your Q. What I dont understand is why is it up to the offender to register themselves and not already be registered as soon as they are convicted. Thats why they slip the system.
