If you live within the city, no. If you live somewhere further out, where the buses only come once an hour, then yes. For the most part though, you can get around by buses just fine. It takes a little bit longer, granted, but it works. The bus system there was voted the best in America.

In Honolulu or Waikiki, no. The Trolley, the "Duck", hotel shuttles, taxis and city buses are all very good ways to get around. Even Hilo Hattie has a free shuttle. There is also island bus service, but you will be waiting a long time for it to go by, as it only goes twice a day, the last time I was there. It is recommended to rent a car if you go to the North Shore. Keep in mind however, that even if you have car insurance, which is required with a car rental, if you have an accident, the issue of payment or insurance reimbursment to the other party MUST be SETTLED and PAID IN FULL before you leave the islands. Very few people realize this legality until they have a fender bender.

If you are going for a vacation, i agree with most of what has been said - I would suggest you make a list of places you plan to visit while there and see how far away they are from where you are staying. try mapping the addresses at Yahoo maps and see what the distance is - in Honolulu and Waikiki the buses come by like every 15 minutes or so. if you are leaving the city to go anywhere you can take the circle island bus - but it is a LOT slower than if you were to drive a car - so if you are going to the north shore or the Polynesian Cultural center or anything out of the town rent a car - even if just for a few days - you should get out of the city and see some of the rest of the island - the east -side is especially green and beautiful.
If you are living there - you will eventually want to get out of the city and see the rest of the island and will probably want a car to do shopping and such...

The key word in your question is "Honolulu". If, in fact, you are staying within Honolulu limits, then the answer is, "No, you don't *need* to have a car." You can walk, take a taxi cab, ride a bus, rent a scooter, or hitch. However, if you plan on hauling, purchasing or carrying packages of items, clothing, and souveniers around then the car and it's inherant truck space can come in handy. Even a plastic bag of three pineapples, six mangoes, and Subway Sandwich from Chinatown to Waikiki can get pretty heavy after a while. A backpack would help. Playing golf? I've seen guys carry their clubs onto the bus toward Ala Wai GC.
It's up to you braddah... and how much you're willing to spend.

No. You don't need to have a car in Honolulu. The Bus system is a excellent way of getting around the city. You can also take the circle bus route to reach points further outside the city limits. Enjoy your trip...

If you are staying in Honolulu or Waikiki and just want to stay in the area you don't need a car. But if you want to visit other parts of the island including other beaches, etc, then a car is very helpful.

Many people take the buses there and they are quite convenient and come often if you are living in the city area. You wouldn't need a car as much as you would need one like in Los Angeles where it is more spread-out and larger... But if you would like to travel further away from the city area like North Shore, Kailua or Kaneohe, a car may be more convenient although there are still buses that can take you to those places that are further away. There are even circle the island buses that take you around the island...

not necessarily. there are buses that come every 30 minutes, and you can get anywhere with the buses. also, the bus fares are really low too. it's about $1. taking the bus is not a hassle. all you need to know are the bus numbers and where you want to be dropped off at. but if you want to have a car, then get a car.

On my last visit 1 picked up a car for 1 day and drove to the North shore. Otherwise a car might not be necessary.
