Isaac was promised to Abram and Sarai who were later named Abraham and Sarah. Ismael was born or Sarai's handmaiden. Because they did not wait on the Lord's timing, Abraham had Ismael with Hagar and thus created a son who's desendants are constantly at odds with God. You can read about it in Genesis Chapters 16-17
