It depends, some kids need a spanking, others need to be put through a wall.

Give an example? Quite frankly, kids do that everyday. Don't touch the stove doesn't mean anything until they've done it and gotten burned. Quit running on the wet sidewalk doesn't matter until they fall and skin up their hands and knees. Don't speed isn't driven home to them until that first accident or traffic ticket. Adults are just as bad.
So if you want your kids to listen, have a good level of trust built up. Kids are more likely to listen when they know the parent is trying to help them and not just fussing because. Some things kids will do anyways, no matter what you say. Getting in trouble is sometimes the best way for them to learn.

It depends on the age of the kid. Is the kid old enough to understand? If your talking about a baby/toddler you may aswell talk to yourself. It is like when you tell them no they want to do it more and more.
