Hello, a nice question, but as the brain functions are so complicated the answer might be longish and not easy for full understanding. But straight to your question, the levels of serotonin in the cerebrospinal fluid ( CSF) appear to be lower in patients with GAD ( Generalized Anxiety Disorder), Depression compared to other ( so called controls). Conversely, the activation of serotonin receptors by m-chlorophemilpiperazine(m-CPP) causes increased anxiety and anger-like responses in most patients with GAD and Depression.
If you want to give you all the data, I am afraid would be so long and I need to attach you also some schemes and Figures, because the serotonin balance in the brain is in immediate bond with receptors as 5HT-2, 5PH-2A, etc.
As you could resume the balance of serotonin levels in the brain is depending on multiple functions, which are interchangeably connected, the neuro system with the hormonal and there are many substances, which are working as "helpers", precursors of the maintenance of stable serotonin levels in the brain.
Many factors effect the whole balance, mostly the sunlight ( when lacks or is reduced the serotonin levels are lowering),some foods ( but it is not proven that the "key" is the proper nutrition with certainty).
Hope that helps.
Have a great day!
