I actually disagree with all of the brands mentioned so far and wouldn't feed them to my cat. High quality premium cat food is best, with human grade meat, no by-products, cheap fillers or chemical preservatives.
My cat loves Nutro Natural Choice brand which has chemical preservatives and corn in it, but I won't buy that again now that I am more aware of better brands out there. I will try Felidae next. Innova EVO is good, by Nature is good, Wellness is good. I haven't tried those foods yet because my cat is on prescription food for now to clear up urinary tract infection probably caused by poor diet from her previous owners. I just adopted her this summer.
With high quality diets, cat eats less because they get more high quality nutrition, so it doesn't cost much more than buying cheap grocery store brands. Visit your local pet store and buy a good high quality food. I feed my cat canned (with extra water added) and dry food.
As for the most affordable brand, it depends on how much you want to spend. The lower the cost, the more added cheap fillers and crap you are buying, the more you pay, the higher quality you receive, along with a healthier pet and less vet bills.

quality biscuits such as purina. cheap ones are too salty (bladder problems) and not enough nutrition. Good biscuits with fresh chopped meat (offal, mince etc) in small amounts every day or 2 . Tinned food is ok, but generally the quality can lead to lack of health in cats, some develop sensitive digestion which makes it hard for them to keep the food down (cat vomit is not something u want to clean out of your carpet!) and its an exspensive procedure for vets to correct, so a quality diet from the begining is better for cat and owner long term.
Remember whatever diet they on, they need fresh supply to lots of water daily.
ps. purina type are not too exspensive, just a bit up from the cheaper ones - definatley worth it!

I use Purina indoor formula. It's surprisingly affordable (I pay about $3.30 at the PX for it), and a bag lasts my two cats for two weeks.
I think I would need to know more about your cat. Is it indoor or outdoor? Both? How old is the cat?
Some cats prefer dry food. Others prefer wet. My cats LOVE wet food, but I can't feed it to them. It makes one of them sick.
So...I would say it depends on your cat. But I've always preferred to feed my cats Purina or Science Diet.

I actually wanna know the answer to that myself.. but I do know that its apparently best to feed cats and kittens a combination of BOTH wet and dry foods for maximum nutrition... even though my kitten refuses to eat canned food....><

I feed my cats dry food but i also give them wet food about once or twice a week because I've heard that it helps to keep their bowels "regular" (less likely to get constipated). As far as what kind of food....it depends on the needs of your cat. They have ones that are specific for like urinary tract ect. My cats aren't fussy so i buy whatever is on sale.

My cat gets Purina One dry food. It's not all that expensive, and is very good quality. She doesn't like wet food too much, and when she does eat it she only wants the expensive kind like Sheba.
