I think the best way to become a bartender is to start working at a restaurant where it's possible to be a barback. If you can't barback, then go for waitstaff. Most bartenders are not "bartending school certified," they've just worked in restaurants for a while, learned recipes for drinks, and eventually took the open position of bartender when it became available.

Don't waste your time with a school. The person before you is right, many take you for a ride, and the truth is that there isn't much they can teach you beyond putting a book of recipes in your hands, and teaching you things like counting your shots (when you pour, you count, and for each count, that equals one shot.) A lot of those schools advertise job placement, but a lot don't follow through. You can find your own job, and can get your own education, don't waste your money on that.

Definitely check out books like Bartending for Dummies, it's got pretty much everything you need to know.

Good luck!

Look into the trade schools in your area that offer bar tending courses. Be careful and make sure you are paying for a 2 WEEK program, anything less than that is a scam. I took a great course many years ago and used bar tending as a primary income while I went to college. Later I still worked part time and eventually taught the course. I think taking the course in bar tending gave me the confidence to get the first bar job.
Good Luck and make a lot of money.

You need to barback to learn or luck into an afternoon position to get into it. Schools never place you in a job. There are more students than jobs. You need to know which glasses go with which drinks. You'll have to know that a highball is any liquor with one mixer. Those would go in a highball glass. You'll have to know what a martini, manhattan, gibson and gimlet are. Those are all in martini glasses unless they are.on the rocks in which you would use a rocks glass. It's pretty simple. I suggest you get a Mr. Boston's book or another book that shows you everything. Some states require a license. You have to look into what your state requires. I found a cool site for you.

It's a good idea to take some classes. But you should also be a person that is creative! And also a good memory... Once you have those things, you can be a bartender internationally... It is a wonderful job... Try it and good luck! You are going to have fun and you will also get to meet people from all walks of life...
